Killing Floor 3 at Announcement (2023) - Everything We Knew
Killing Floor 3 was revealed in August 2023 at Gamescom Opening Night Live. At that point there was only a Steam page, a handful of screenshots and an announcement trailer, so early coverage had to work with very little. This page collects what was known at the reveal, based on a Gaming.net overview from that week, and adds a short note on how things turned out. For the finished game, see Killing Floor 3 and the release date page.

Why the announcement mattered
Co-op survival horror shooters were having a moment in 2023, with games like Back 4 Blood and Sons of the Forest getting attention. But the genre is older than that, and the original Killing Floor from 2009 was one of its most influential entries, darker and more chaotic than most of its rivals. That reputation is why the series stayed relevant, and why a third main game was big news for fans.
What is Killing Floor 3?

Killing Floor 3 is a co-op survival horror FPS from Tripwire Interactive. Like the earlier games, it is built around wave survival. The series has never had a full story campaign: the first game had objective-based missions, and Killing Floor 2 added a Versus Survival mode where players control zeds. At the reveal, the expectation was the same core loop, with the possibility that Tripwire might add new modes on top.
Story and setting

The series has always had a background story rather than a campaign. The Horzine Corporation created bloodthirsty bioengineered monsters that are wiping out humanity, and the players are among the last survivors fighting back. More on that in Horzine Corporation lore.
Killing Floor 3 moves the story to 2091. According to the official description, the megacorp Horzine has produced "the ultimate army", an obedient horde of bioengineered monsters called zeds, and only the rebel group Nightfall stands between them and the future of humanity.
Gameplay
Zeds caught in a burst of fire in a large industrial area.
The announcement summed up the gameplay in one line: you play as a Nightfall specialist who joins up to five teammates to fight waves of zeds, earn dosh, unlock skills and build the ultimate arsenal. So up to six players can play together, the same as in the earlier games.
Beyond that, details were thin. The screenshots focused on the new zed designs, and fans quickly started guessing which classic specimen each one was based on. The general expectation: lots of guns, nonstop waves and big boss fights.
Development

The game is made by Tripwire Interactive, the same studio behind the first two games. At the reveal it was not clear how far along development was, but there was enough material for a store page, screenshots and in-engine footage in the trailer.
The announcement trailer

The trailer shows Horzine's "ultimate army" up close, and these zeds looked like the most frightening and gory versions in the series so far. Near the end, short gameplay clips appear. One moment that stood out is a brutal melee finishing move at around 0:57, similar to the glory kills of the Doom series, which many viewers hoped would become a real feature. All official trailers are collected on the Killing Floor 3 trailer page.
