How to clear favorite servers in Killing Floor

A guide for a regular player. Nothing complicated: close the game, make a backup, clear the list, open the game and check.

What gets deleted

Only the servers in the Favorites list are deleted.

These are not touched:

  • characters;
  • perks;
  • graphics settings;
  • maps;
  • mods;
  • saved game files.

The easiest way

D:\games\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\KillingFloor
  1. Close Killing Floor.
  2. Press Win + X.
  3. Choose Terminal or Windows PowerShell.
  4. Copy the whole command below.
  5. Paste it into the PowerShell window.
  6. Press Enter.
$ini = 'D:\games\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\KillingFloor\System\KillingFloor.ini'
$backup = "$ini.bak-favorites-$(Get-Date -Format yyyyMMdd-HHmmss)"
Copy-Item -LiteralPath $ini -Destination $backup

$encoding = [Text.Encoding]::GetEncoding(28591)
$text = $encoding.GetString([IO.File]::ReadAllBytes($ini))
$text = [regex]::Replace($text, '(?ms)^Favorites=.*?(?=^Favorites=|^\[|\z)', '')
[IO.File]::WriteAllBytes($ini, $encoding.GetBytes($text))

"Done. Backup: $backup"
Multiplayer -> Server Browser -> Favorites

The list should be empty.

Example

Favorites=(ServerID=0,IP="80.96.59.223",Port=7707,...)
Favorites=(ServerID=0,IP="46.4.12.165",Port=7707,...)
Favorites=(ServerID=0,IP="185.97.253.250",Port=7707,...)
SteamLoginMenuClass=ROInterface.ROSteamLoginPage

[XGame.xDeathMatch]

That is fine: there are no Favorites=... lines between those lines anymore.

If you want to do it manually

  1. Close Killing Floor.
D:\games\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\KillingFloor\System\KillingFloor.ini
SteamLoginMenuClass=ROInterface.ROSteamLoginPage
Favorites=
[XGame.xDeathMatch]
  1. Save the file.

Important: some server names look strange and can span several lines. So for the manual way use Notepad++ or another editor that shows line numbers. If you are not sure, use the PowerShell command from the section above.

If the list came back

Sometimes Steam keeps its own separate list of favorite servers. It is shared by the old Steam Server Browser, not only by Killing Floor.

Do this only if the list came back after clearing KillingFloor.ini.

  1. Close Steam completely.
  2. Find the Steam icon in the bottom right corner of Windows.
  3. Right-click it.
  4. Choose Exit Steam.
  5. Open PowerShell.
$steamUserData = 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata'
$stamp = Get-Date -Format yyyyMMdd-HHmmss
$emptyFavorites = "`"Filters`"`r`n{`r`n`t`"favorites`"`r`n`t{`r`n`t}`r`n}`r`n"

Get-ChildItem -LiteralPath $steamUserData -Directory | ForEach-Object {
    $vdf = Join-Path $_.FullName '7\remote\serverbrowser_hist.vdf'
    if (Test-Path -LiteralPath $vdf) {
        Copy-Item -LiteralPath $vdf -Destination "$vdf.bak-favorites-$stamp"
        [IO.File]::WriteAllText($vdf, $emptyFavorites, [Text.Encoding]::ASCII)
        "Cleared: $vdf"
    }
}

After that start Steam and Killing Floor.

How to undo everything

If something went wrong, the backup sits next to the original file.

D:\games\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\KillingFloor\System\KillingFloor.ini.bak-favorites-20260719-153000

To restore it:

  1. Close Killing Floor.
D:\games\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\KillingFloor\System\KillingFloor.ini
KillingFloor.ini

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to delete the whole System folder?

No. Do not delete the System folder.

Do I need to reinstall the game?

No. Clearing favorite servers does not need a reinstall.

Did the command delete my perks?

No. The command only removes the Favorites=... lines from KillingFloor.ini.

Can I add servers to favorites again?

Yes. Open the server list in the game and add the servers you want with Add to Favorites.

Adding a server to favorites manually

Based on the killingfloor.ru forum threads "Избранные сервера" (Favorite servers), "Не добавляютца сервери в избраноэ кроме одного" (Servers other than one are not added to favorites) and "Добавление серверов Proton в избранное." (Adding Proton servers to favorites).

  • In the server browser you can add a server from the right-click menu by entering its IP and port. If you enter only the IP, the server is added with port 7707.
  • Without starting the game, you can write the entry into System\KillingFloor.ini, in the [XInterface.ExtendedConsole] section, as a line like this:
Favorites=(ServerID=0,IP="SERVERIP",Port=SERVERPORT,QueryPort=QUERYPORT,ServerName="SERVERNAME")
  • Add servers inside the game itself, not through Steam's favorites.
  • If the game says "server added" but only one server stays in favorites, check whether KillingFloor.ini has the "Read-only" attribute and clear it. According to a thread participant, this happens occasionally on Windows 8 and later.
