Killing Floor. Russian text in English version
Many Russian-speaking players play the English version of the game (due to the terrible quality of localization and other reasons), and the inability to see text written by other players in Russian becomes a very big problem for both.
Procedure
Killing Floor has a problem with the display of Russian letters in the English version of the game. Text written in Russian is visible only in the Russian version of the game, and in the English version it is displayed as a sequence of tilde characters (~). Fortunately, there is a temporary solution to this problem until the developers fix the error. To do this, fonts with support for Russian letters are inserted into the game files.
-
Set the game language to English in the Steam library (right-click on the game -> Properties -> Language -> English), if it is not already installed.
-
The files that we need are in the System directory of the game.
<PATH_TO_STEAM>\\steamapps\\common\\killingfloor\\System
<PATH_TO_STEAM> is the path where the Steam client is installed: C:\\Program Files\\Steam in most cases.
These are ordinary text files that can be edited in any text editor (for example, Notepad).
Engine.int GUI2K4.int KFMod.int ROEngine.int UnrealGame.int XInterface.int
Find --> Replace with
ROFonts.ROBtsrmVr --> ROFonts_RUS.ROArial ROFontsTwo.ROArial24DS --> ROFonts_Rus.ROArial24 ROFontsTwo.ROArial22DS ---> ROFonts_Rus.ROArial22 ROFontsTwo.ROArial18DS ---> ROFonts_Rus.ROArial18 ROFontsTwo.ROArial14DS ---> ROFonts_Rus.ROArial14 ROFontsTwo.ROArial12DS ---> ROFonts_Rus.ROArial12 ROFontsTwo.ROArial9DS ---> ROFonts_Rus.ROArial9 ROFontsTwo.ROArial7DS ---> ROFonts_Rus.ROArial7
- Now launch the game. If everything was replaced correctly, then the game will be in English with English voice acting, but Russian letters will be visible in the game: in the chat and in other places (server messages, console, etc.).
Chat messages can be written in Russian

Additions
From the thread "How to get Russian chat in the English version of the game" on the killingfloor.ru forum (ЛОХМАТЫЙ, 2011–2013).
Which files to change. Change the .int files in System that contain lines like FontArrayNames[0]="ROFonts_Rus... (or similar ones with ROFonts_Rus as the value). In the thread these were UnrealGame.int, ROEngine.int, KFMod.int, XInterface.int, GUI2K4.int and Engine.int; UnrealGame.int holds UT texts, so its language does not matter much. For version 1032, KFMod.int and KFGui.int were enough: menus and messages stay in English, but Russian fonts are set, so Russian chat and labels display.
If the game is set to Russian (a 2013 addition), there is a simpler way: keep the Russian fonts but drop the Russian texts.
- In
KFMod.rus, keep only the[HUDKillingFloor]section with the fonts:

- The other
*.rusfiles can be deleted. Chat and menus will then "understand" Russian, and there should be no~~~~~tildes instead of Russian letters (the author tested it himself).
If you set the "read-only" attribute on GUI2K4.rus, KFGui.rus and KFMod.rus, Steam's auto-update will not overwrite them and you will not have to edit them again.
Russian voice-over with English text (Steam)
From the killingfloor.ru forum, "Озвучка RUS/ENG?" (Voice-over RUS/ENG?) thread: you can keep the English text but hear the Russian voice-over.
- In Steam, switch the Killing Floor language to Russian (about 90 MB will download).
- In the
Soundsfolder, deleteKF_BasePatriarch.uax,KF_MaleVoiceOne.uax,KF_MaleVoiceTwo.uaxandKF_Trader.uax. - The files
KF_BasePatriarch.rus_uax,KF_MaleVoiceOne.rus_uax,KF_MaleVoiceTwo.rus_uaxandKF_Trader.rus_uaxremain: rename each one, removingrus_from the extension. - Switch the language back to English in Steam and launch the game.
According to the thread, everything works correctly. If something goes wrong after changing the language, verify the game cache in the game's Steam properties (Local Files -> Verify integrity of game cache).
Your own texts: map descriptions, biographies, messages
From the "Редактирование текстовой части игры [инструкция]" (editing the game's text, a guide) thread on the killingfloor.ru forum (DARK-MEN, with a correction by ЛОХМАТЫЙ). The game's texts are in the System folder, in .rus (Russian version) and .int files: where there is no .rus file, the Russian game takes the text from .int, and the English game uses .int directly. Back up a file before editing it. Most of the text is in KFGui.rus and KFMod.rus (names and descriptions of the translated weapons, perks and bonuses).
- Map description. For example
KF-BioticsLab.rus: under[LevelSummary]andTitle="KF-BioticsLab"comes theDescription="..."line, the description shown when choosing a map. The[KFUseTrigger...]sections containMessage="..."lines, the door prompts, which can be rewritten too. The[KFMusicTrigger1]section controls the map's music. - Character biographies (only translated ones) are in
KFGui.rus, below the[DecoText]line. - The quit dialog is in
KFGui.rus, section[KFQuitPage]: leave the first and fourth lines (the "Yes" and "No" answers) alone, while the second and third can be rewritten. - Write the text inside the quotes. Sections like
[DamTypeAK47AssaultRifle]withDeathString=are for player-versus-player mods; only edit them if you rename a weapon.
Additions
Two programs that apply the font fix automatically:
- vanstar's fixer (the "Русские шрифты в английской версии Killing floor (fix)" thread): does the same as described above, but by itself, so you do not have to redo the edit after every Steam update. Requires .NET Framework 4 or later. Save the program to the game root (for example
<PATH_TO_STEAM>\steamapps\common\killingfloor\), run it and press Enter. - KillingFloorFixer 1.0 (SiriusHARD): adds Russian character support to the English version, fixes the bug where settings did not save in the Russian version, and fixes the localization file for wide screens, where some menu buttons were not visible while on a server. It ships no ready-made files: it patches the current game files. Unpack it to the game root, run it and pick the fix you need. The first version broke LAN voice chat; the author uploaded a fixed one that puts the files back when run. Фрэгл later wrote in the thread: "The program is NOT correct. Wait for the author's reply."
