Killing Floor Lag, High Ping and Disconnects - Network Fixes
Killing Floor is all about co-op waves, so a bad connection hurts. You might get kicked mid-match, see Zeds teleport, or freeze on the loading screen while joining a friend. The causes vary, but most of them are on your side of the connection and can be fixed without extra software. This guide covers the generic fixes and works for the whole series. Where the steps differ between Killing Floor 1, 2 and 3, it says so.
Connection problems in Killing Floor: disconnects, lag and failed joins.
Common connection problems
1. Server timeout or disconnection
You are suddenly dropped from a match with a "Connection Lost" or "Server Timeout" message. Typical causes:
- The host server is unstable.
- Your NAT type is restricted.
- A firewall is blocking the game's ports.
- The game and server have gone out of sync (desync).
2. High ping and lag spikes
High latency shows up as teleporting enemies and delayed shooting or movement. Main causes:
- Playing on a server that is far away.
- Downloads or other bandwidth-heavy apps running in the background.
- ISP throttling at peak hours.
- A weak router or outdated router firmware.
3. Matchmaking errors
You cannot join a match, or the game freezes on the loading screen. Possible causes:
- Corrupted game files.
- Steam client bugs.
- A version mismatch between you and the host or server (see package version mismatch).
- An incomplete update or DLC that has not synced.
Most fixes below work for all three games. Killing Floor 3 also has its own server errors, linked at the end.
How to fix it
1. Check and tidy up your network
- Use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi.
- Restart your router or modem to refresh the connection.
- Close background apps that eat bandwidth, such as torrent clients, streaming and cloud sync.
- Aim for an Open NAT (Type 1). Enabling UPnP on the router or forwarding the ports below usually gets you there.
2. Adjust Steam and the game
- In Steam > Settings > Downloads, choose a download region close to you.
- If performance suffers, turn off the Steam overlay and in-game voice chat.
- How to mute voice chat in KF1 (killingfloor.ru forum, thread "How to turn off voice chat?", 2011): unticking voice chat in Settings > Audio did not save for the thread's author. What does work: press Esc during a match, open Communication and block specific players. The voice volume slider only goes down to 1, not 0, and muting it entirely also silences the voice commands and useful callouts. Another suggestion was to set this in
System\KillingFloor.ini:

[Engine.VoiceChatReplicationInfo]
bEnableVoiceChat=False
- If the microphone works in other programs but not in KF1 ("Microphone setup" thread, killingfloor.ru forum, 2012; the thread has no confirmed fix): make sure the right microphone is the Windows default, disable "Stereo Mix", and untick the in-game volume auto-adjust option. As a last resort, rename
KillingFloor.iniandUser.ini(keep a copy) so the game recreates them. The voice channels the game joins are stored inUser.iniasRejoinChannels=lines in the[UnrealGame.UnrealPlayer]section and depend on the last server you visited. - Verify the game files: right-click the game in your library > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files.
3. Forward the game's ports
Open these ports on your router and forward them to your PC's local IP address:
| Protocol | Ports |
|---|---|
| TCP | 7707, 28852 |
| UDP | 7707-7708, 28852 |
This is the basic client-side set. Running your own server needs more (query, web admin and Steam ports), and Killing Floor 2 uses its own defaults. See the full Killing Floor ports and NAT guide.
4. Update the game, drivers and system
- Keep the game and Steam updated. A mismatch with the server's version is a common reason a join fails.
- Update your network adapter and GPU drivers.
- Install Windows (or other OS) security updates regularly.
5. Reinstall the game
If nothing above helps, do a clean reinstall:
- Back up your config files if you have custom settings or binds.
- Uninstall the game through Steam.
- Delete the leftover settings folder in Documents\My Games:
KillingFloorfor KF1,KillingFloor2for KF2. - Reinstall and test again.
FAQ
- Why do I keep getting disconnected from Killing Floor servers?
- Usually because the host server is unstable, your NAT type is strict, or a firewall is blocking the game's ports.
- Which ports does Killing Floor use?
- The commonly listed set is TCP 7707 and 28852, and UDP 7707-7708 and 28852. Forward them to your PC's local IP address. Server hosts need a longer list; see the ports and NAT guide.
- Can I play with friends in other regions?
- Yes, but the further away the server is, the higher your ping. Pick a server roughly halfway between players, or let the player with the best connection host.
- How much internet speed does Killing Floor need?
- Not much. The source recommends at least 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload for stable play. Stability and ping matter more than raw speed.
