How to Reinstall Killing Floor Without Losing Settings, Favourite Servers and Progress

Before reinstalling Killing Floor 1 or Windows, save a few files from the game folder, or you will be setting up controls, finding servers and downloading maps all over again. The list comes from the FAQ and Фрэгл's answers on the killingfloor.ru forum (2011).

What to save

File or folderWhereWhat it holds
KillingFloor.iniSystemNearly all game settings. The favourite servers list is in the [XInterface.ExtendedConsole] section
User.iniSystemControls, binds, player settings
Stats.binSystemPerk progress and achievements in non-Steam builds and offline play without Steam. In the Steam version progress lives on Steam's servers
Cachegame rootFiles downloaded from servers (maps, mutators, skins), so you do not download them again
Mapsgame rootMaps you installed by hand

If you installed translations, mutators or skins, or edited Core.rus and other localisation files, save those too.

How to reinstall

  1. Copy the files from the table into a separate folder.
  2. Uninstall the game: in Steam use Uninstall in the library; other versions go through Programs and Features.
  3. Delete what is left of the game folder. For old unofficial builds, check for leftover registry entries; tools like CCleaner help.
  4. Install the game again and run it once so it creates its files.
  5. Close the game and copy your saved files back, replacing the new ones.

If you move KillingFloor.ini between different game versions, do not copy the whole file; move only the [XInterface.ExtendedConsole] section with your favourites, because the newer version may have new settings. Some builds add their own servers to favourites on install; those come from Default.ini.
