Killing Floor v1065 Non-Steam Build: What It Is and How It Works

Killing Floor 1 has been frozen at version 1065 for years, and a number of community sites still package that final build as a standalone "non-Steam" installer. One of them is the KF section of ws-gaming.eu, a site best known for Counter-Strike 1.6 downloads that also runs its own KF1 servers. This page explains what that kind of v1065 package is, what it promises, and where it falls short compared with the Steam version.

If you just want the legal route, skip to the end: the Steam version is the same build with full online features. For other download options, see Killing Floor Download and Where to Get the Game.

What "v1065" means

Version 1065 is the last numbered update of Killing Floor 1. Because no newer patch exists, every server and every client that wants to play together has to be on 1065. A mismatch (for example an old 10xx retail install) produces version errors when connecting, which is covered in Package version mismatch.

The non-Steam package is the game files of that build plus a launcher setup that does not require the Steam client to start.

What the package claims to improve

The distributor describes the v1065 setup with these highlights:

  • Stability for online co-op and for hosting your own server.
  • Fixes for crashes during map loading and for lobby problems.
  • Smoother play and less lag on modern PCs.
  • Better compatibility with custom maps and mods.

Most of this is simply the result of being on the final official build: custom maps and mutators made in the last years of KF1 target 1065, so an older version breaks them.

Why people still install KF1

The page's pitch is the same reason the game is alive today: replay value, the community, and chaos. Waves of Specimens, six perks, and difficulties up to Hell on Earth keep it replayable, and community maps and mods keep adding content long after official support ended. The source page also embeds a KF1 gameplay video.

Download options and what is preinstalled

The site offers the same setup through several mirrors:

  • torrent;
  • Mediafire;
  • Mega.nz;
  • a direct download.

According to the page, the installer is a one-click setup without bundled third-party software, and it adds the site's own KF servers to your Favorites so you have somewhere to play straight away. Those servers (a Normal and a Hard server on port 7707, plus additional instances on other ports) are listed on GameTracker, where the page says they rank near the top of KF server lists.

Safety checklist for any non-Steam installer

Third-party installers are a common malware vector, whatever a site promises. Before running one:

  1. Scan the downloaded file with your antivirus and an online multi-engine scanner.
  2. Prefer a mirror that shows the file size and hash, and compare them.
  3. Install into a normal folder (not Program Files) so the game can write its INI files.
  4. Do not run unknown "patchers" or "unlockers" that come with the archive.

Limits compared with Steam

Official perk progress and achievementsNoYes
Steam WorkshopNoYes
Non-Steam community serversYesDepends on the server

Some non-Steam servers run ServerPerks, a server-side perk system that saves your levels on that server only. See Possible ways to upgrade perks for how perk progression works in different setups.

In builds that use the RevEmu emulator, your nickname is set in rev.ini in the game folder, on the PlayerName= line. To join a server without the browser, open the console (~) and type open IP:port.

The official route

Killing Floor is still sold on Steam and is frequently discounted. Buying it gives you the same 1065 build plus Steam servers, achievements, the Workshop and the official perk stats. The steps are in How to Buy and Play Killing Floor.

Joining the community

The source page ends by inviting players to share maps, mods and impressions on the site's forum. Whatever build you use, community forums and Discord servers are still the best place to find active servers and custom content for KF1.

FAQ

Is v1065 the latest version of Killing Floor 1?
Yes. 1065 is the final version number of KF1; there have been no further patches, which is why community servers and installers standardize on it.
Can a non-Steam v1065 build join Steam servers?
Not reliably. Non-Steam builds are meant for non-Steam servers such as the ones preloaded in the package's favorites. Steam servers expect a Steam-authenticated client.
Do perks and achievements progress on a non-Steam build?
Official perk progress and achievements are tied to Steam stats, so they do not carry over. Some non-Steam servers run their own perk systems (ServerPerks) that save progress on the server instead.
What is the official way to get the game?
Buy Killing Floor on Steam (app 1250). It runs the same 1065 build and gives you Steam servers, Workshop, achievements and perk stats.
