KF2 Outpost Story: Crash Near the HorZine Base (Fan Fiction)

This short fan story is the first part of a mission narrative set around the Killing Floor 2 map Outpost, the snowy Horzine base. It is written in the first person by a lone surviving Mercenary and exists in two language versions, English and Russian, which this page retells. It is not official canon, but it fits the map's mood well. For the real Horzine background, see KF2 lore pages or the official wiki.

Official artwork for the map

The Art of Killing Floor 2 book describes Outpost as a Horzine security training base far in the north of Norway, hidden in the hills with heavy cloud cover and a harsh climate. Concept art shows it beneath an aurora.

Story summary

The narrator wakes to searing heat, choking smoke and a veil of tears. He crawls through the snow away from the fire, gulping icy air, and looks for his team. Four half-burnt bodies lie on the white ground and under rubble, yet the team had six members, so two are unaccounted for. Surprisingly he is almost unharmed. He gathers ammunition and equipment boxes from the wreck, and a complex of buildings appears nearby: the HorZine base, their destination.

He follows boot prints and bloody marks to a looted supply chest. He finds a medical syringe, takes it because his own was lost in the crash and checks himself: only light injuries. He follows the tracks toward the base.

As he walks, the memory returns. The detachment flew north to find out why the Outpost had lost communication and stopped reporting. No distress signal had been received. Ten minutes from the target, as the helicopter lost altitude, the navigation system failed. "Perhaps we entered the base's defense zone," he thought. Dull impacts hit the hull without breaking it, and the helicopter was set on fire. The pilot saw shots from a distance, and then the engine failed and they fell. Some unknown force affected the helicopter besides the shots. Falling, the narrator glimpsed dark figures about 300 meters away, and wondered whether they were not people but Zeds.

He reaches the complex and finds exactly what he imagined: high, rough, angular concrete walls, HorZine logos everywhere, massive mechanical doors, many cameras, and everything closed. The tracks end. Then he realizes he has lost his pass, which had been fastened inside his clothes. A wounded comrade probably took it, searched him and moved on without waiting. He will have to find another way in, which is where this part ends.

Why read it

  • It adds atmosphere to the Outpost map: a lost base, a downed helicopter and Horzine security with unknown defenders.
  • The author published both an English and a Russian version, so it also works as language practice.
