KF2 Berserker Bossing Guide: Nailgun, Pulverizer, Parrying

A tank-focused Berserker walkthrough from early access, covering the leveling path and how to deal with the Scrake, Fleshpound and Hans. For general advice see Berserker with the Pulverizer and Crovel.

Play styles

There are two: work with teammates and draw the mini-bosses' attention so they can finish them, or be a lone wolf who takes on every challenge yourself.

Rounds guide for XP

  • Round 1: run around and find weapons to sell. Your priority is the nailgun, then the Pulverizer. Zeds still spawn around you, so you still gain XP.
  • Round 2: do not buy armor (it is critical mainly against chainsaw zeds, flesh eaters and the boss). With the nailgun use scatter shot on mobs and single shot on small ones. Do not worry about headshots: you earn XP by dealing damage, and you do not have to get the kill.
  • Round 3: no armor required; resupply the nailgun and keep dealing damage.
  • Round 4: buy armor if you have not found any. If needed skip the nailgun resupply and get the Pulverizer. Aim to hit as many zeds as possible.
  • Rounds 5-10: keep the nailgun and Pulverizer. When a Scrake or Fleshpound appears, kill or wound the zeds around it with the nailgun and guide the Scrake to an open area. Use the Pulverizer to parry a Fleshpound while the team deals damage.

Weapons of choice

The Pulverizer and the nailgun. The Pulverizer has great knockback and one-shots bloats and Sirens with a hard blow; the nailgun clears the zeds that linger around Scrakes so you can control them safely.

Scrake

  • Lure him to an open area. Never run away when he is angry and chasing you; run straight at him (the author runs through his right side) and he will miss.
  • Quickly get behind his back, staying behind his upper body (it twists oddly). If you lose control, calm down: either regain the back position or run to gain distance and charge again.
  • Start with light attacks until you can reliably stay behind him, then use the Pulverizer heavy swing.

Fleshpound

  • Master parrying and learn his attack patterns; your job is to parry until the team kills him. You will fail and take damage at first.
  • Parry his jump attack, stay in front of him ready for the next hit, then walk backward to add space, which makes him leap; parry again and repeat.
  • Do not treat him like a Scrake. Add attacks only once you can parry him well.

Hans ("Vans" in the original)

The author calls him the easiest boss: treat him like a Scrake. Hide behind a corner and let him run by to get behind him without taking ranged damage. If you stay close he only tries melee. Always stay behind his back and run when white smoke comes off his body, because he is about to grab someone. Do not play Scrake-style when another player is already doing it: it makes him drop poison grenades at his feet, which can kill you or your teammate. Once the smoke clears, get behind him again and repeat.

FAQ

Do you need to kill zeds to gain XP?
No. According to the guide, you only need to damage a zed once to earn experience, so keep hitting as many as possible.
What is the key to soloing a Scrake?
Never run away from an enraged Scrake; run straight at it so its swing misses, then get behind its upper body and hit it with the Pulverizer.
