How to Play Old Versions of KF2 with Steam download_depot

This guide, written during the period when KF2 development had moved to a different studio, explains how to download and run old builds of Killing Floor 2 using Steam's console. The author urges players to do it promptly, citing a Steam change that stopped SteamDB from reading package information for depots without a token, which could make old builds hard to reach. The text is opinionated about the game's later direction; this page keeps the practical steps.

Open the Steam console

Press Win+R (or open the Run window) and enter steam://open/console, then OK. There are other ways, but this is the simplest.

Commands for major builds

Enter one of these in the console command bar and press Enter; it starts downloading the chosen depot build:

These are only the major updates; the author links a list of all older builds before 2018.

Install the files

  1. When the download finishes, the content is in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\content\app_232090\depot_232091\<build ID>.
  2. Take those files and go to Documents\My Games\Killing Floor 2, replacing what is needed. The author is not sure whether the files should instead go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Killing Floor 2\, as they lacked the drive space to find out. Back up your current files first.
  3. Launch the game through Steam as usual.

What to expect

According to the author, the early builds had limb dismemberment of hands and feet, a better optimized FLEX, no microtransactions, no E.D.A.R.s, no later HRG weapons or pay-to-use weapons, and bosses like Hans Volter and the Patriarch that felt like proper bosses. They also claim wall and ceiling crawlers and soft-body organs were seen working in Dev Diary footage before being removed. These are the author's opinions.

The author does not know if online play works when you and a friend install the same build; maybe if you create your own server, but public servers are unlikely. See also KF2 dedicated server with SteamCMD for running your own.
