KF2 Player Career FAQ: Levelling, Friends, Skill, Burnout

This is a translation and paraphrase of a Chinese-language Steam guide titled "KF2 player career guide". It is a short FAQ for newcomers, written in early autumn 2015 when the game was still in Early Access and aimed at the Chinese-speaking community.

Will I stop playing after buying it?

The author says no. Seen as a game with potential, KF2 follows an update model similar to CS:GO and Payday 2, with a long stream of large updates to come. Interest should keep growing, so players short on time can wait for later updates and the experience will get better.

What kind of game is it?

Killing Floor 2 is a class-based cooperative zombie game, mostly built around a survival mode that plays like arena defense. It emphasizes teamwork between perks and a variety of weapons and tactics. Every perk and weapon has clear strengths and weaknesses, and ZEDs have resistances and weaknesses to different damage types, so the game rewards counter-picking and good aim. The author compares it to CS and to RPG dungeon raids.

How do I level faster?

Levelling takes time. When you are confident, try Suicidal difficulty, where you can practice basic division of roles without it being too hard, and where there is enough experience to reach level 20 quickly. By level 20 your perk is mostly formed. If you are confident, move on to Hell on Earth, where the large experience gains take you to maximum level fast.

How do I find friends to play with?

QQ groups tend to turn noisy over time and it is hard for new players to find real information or good company there, while forums are more distant. The author's suggestions:

  1. Stick to one or two servers so you quickly get to know the regulars.
  2. Be outgoing in game, use the microphone, and add friendly, skilled players.
  3. Talk in groups and play with the experienced players there.
  4. Start a new group yourself and post a friend-finding thread on the forum.
  5. The forum now allows and encourages friend-finding and group-advertising posts.
  6. In short, build your own circle: good teammates are part of enjoying KF2.

How do I get better?

  • Read the "tactics exchange" section of the featured posts on the Baidu Tieba Killing Floor forum for basic tactics and an introduction to the game, then improve through real play and discussion with other posters.
  • Use a test map to study the different weapons and ZEDs.
  • Use a microphone in real matches: follow orders or direct your teammates.

What if I am tired of it after 200 hours?

If you have a strong carry on your team, try showy or experimental tactics. Otherwise leave the game for now and come back when there is an update.
