KF2: Unbind the Console From the Apostrophe Key (KFInput.ini)
In Killing Floor 2 the console opens on the Tilde key, but the Apostrophe key opens it as well. If you type apostrophes in chat or just hit the key by habit, the console box pops up and eats your input. A small edit to one config line fixes it.
How to do it
On Windows, open KFInput.ini in your user folder:
C:\Users\<AccountName>\Documents\My Games\KillingFloor2\KFGame\Config
In the original guide the relevant part sits around line 309, right after [Engine.Console], as the line ConsoleKey=Tilde. Binding the console to another key, or to an arbitrary label, removes it from both Tilde and Apostrophe.
ConsoleKey=NumPadFive- the author's choice: the console opens only while NumLock is on, which is much safer against accidental presses.ConsoleKey=MagicalStarpuffs- any non-existent label removes the binding entirely, and the game does not complain.
Finding key names
Each key has a reasonably named label in the file, such as SpaceBar or Up/Down/Left/Right. For keys with long names or symbols, search KFInput.ini for similar entries. A shorter file, DefaultInput.ini in steamapps\common\killingfloor2\KFGame\Config, may list a few rare labels that KFInput.ini lacks.
Tips from the comments
- F3 also opens the command bar, so you can type without the large box repeating your previous entry.
- Text strings such as the wave start message, voice commands and difficulty names live in the game's localization folder (
KFGame\localization\INT\KFGame) and can be edited for fun.
For the same job with the other config file, see change the console key in BaseInput. General console use is covered in the console commands reference.
FAQ
- Where is KFInput.ini?
- In Documents\My Games\KillingFloor2\KFGame\Config under your user profile.
- How do I stop the apostrophe from opening the console?
- Change the ConsoleKey line under [Engine.Console] from Tilde to another key name or a meaningless label. That unbinds both Tilde and Apostrophe.
- Where can I find key names?
- Search KFInput.ini for similar entries, or look at DefaultInput.ini in the game's KFGame\Config folder.
