KF2 Media Player Hook: Play Your Own Music in Waves

KF2 Media Player is a small community tool from December 2015 that lets you play your own music during Killing Floor 2 waves. It works by launching the game through a small executable that loads a hook DLL, and it then sends the Play and Stop media key signals to whatever player you use whenever the game's wave music starts or ends. The version history in the guide says the author improved end-of-wave detection on December 10, 2015 and fixed music hiccups between mob waves on December 9, 2015.

For other ways to replace the music, see the music replacement tool and replacing music with Wwise WEM files.

Requirements

  • A music player that responds to the keyboard media keys (Play, Stop, Fast Forward, etc.).
  • A keyboard with physical media keys is not required, but helps in some situations (see the tips).
  • Using the software means accepting its license on the project's GitHub page.

Installation

  1. Download KF2_MediaPlayer.exe and KF2_MediaPlayer_Hook.dll from the author's GitHub project.
  2. Place both next to KFGame.exe, normally C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\killingfloor2\Binaries\Win64.

If you are not comfortable running software from strangers, which is a sound policy, you can inspect the source and compile the project yourself.

How to use

  1. Open your media player and build a playlist. Put it on repeat so it does not run out of songs.
  2. Press play and immediately pause the player.
  3. With Steam running, start KF2_MediaPlayer.exe. The game launches.

When the wave music begins in the game, your playlist starts too.

Tips

  • Mute the game's music in the Audio settings by lowering the music volume to zero.
  • Sometimes the music does not stop after a wave or does not start at the beginning of one. Use your keyboard media keys to play or stop it manually.
  • Adjust your music player's volume so it matches the game's volume.
  • If you are missing MSVCP140.dll, install the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015.

FAQ

What does KF2 Media Player do?
It starts and stops your own music player together with the in-game wave music, so your playlist plays during waves.
Where do the files go?
Next to KFGame.exe, usually in the killingfloor2\Binaries\Win64 folder of your Steam library.
Why do I get a missing MSVCP140.dll error?
You need the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015.
