KF2: Replace the In-Game Music with Audacity and Wwise (.wem)
This guide, written in Russian, shows how to replace Killing Floor 2's built-in music with your own tracks. It needs two programs and works by renaming your converted files to the numbers of the tracks you want to replace. For an automated approach see the KF2 custom music replacement tool and installing the KF1 music pack.
Preparation
You need:
- Audacity, an audio editor to convert your music to WAV.
- Wwise Authoring Tools (Audiokinetic) to convert tracks to the game's
.wemformat.
New Wwise versions cause crashes, so use an older one: v2014.1.6 (the author tested it) or v2015.1.6. To download: create an account on the site, open Products, Wwise, scroll to the bottom and click Download, then use the "Older version" button on the download page and pick the version in the Wwise row. Also prepare the tracks you want to hear.
Audacity
Import the track (File, Import, Audio, or drag it into the window), then File, Export Audio, and save as "WAV (Microsoft) signed 16 bit PCM".
Exporting as signed 16-bit PCM WAV.
Wwise and the .wem format
- Launch Wwise and click New at the bottom of the window, enter a project name and press OK; converted tracks will be saved in that project.
Creating a project.
- Project, Project Settings, General: make sure the Windows platform is ticked (others can be unticked).
- Project, Project Settings, Source Settings: set Vorbis quality to High in Conversion Settings.
Setting the Vorbis quality.
- Project, Import audio files, Add files.
- Select your tracks in the main window and set them up as in the original screenshots, raising the volume slider to maximum. On the Source Settings tab you can choose the format if you did not before, and edit the quality settings.
- Finally, Project, Convert All Audio Files; check that Windows is selected and press OK. Then close Wwise.
Replacing the files
- Find your converted files in
Documents\WwiseProjects\<project name>\.cache\Windows\SFX. - Open the game music folder:
steam\SteamApps\common\killingfloor2\KFGame\BrewedPC\WwiseAudio\Windows. - Back up the files you are going to replace.
- Each track has a number. To learn which one to replace, look for the files
WwiseDefaultBank_WW_MACT_Default.txtandWwiseDefaultBank_WW_MAMB_Default.txt: MACT lists the combat tracks during waves, MAMB the tracks between waves (shopping time). The author notes that the txt files were later replaced with bnk, making the numbers harder to find, so a track list from earlier and from Reddit is included. - Rename your Wwise files to the number from the track list, and move them into the folder replacing the originals.
