Zedternal Unlimited Beginner's Guide for Killing Floor 2
Zedternal Reborn is a total overhaul mutator for Killing Floor 2's Endless mode. It swaps the vanilla perk system for a roguelike upgrade system in which you spend Dosh during trader time on perks, skills, weapon upgrades and equipment. This guide, written by a player who runs and tunes servers, covers joining, the upgrade menu, the economy, special waves, commands and the INI files. It also complements our other mod pages for server-side difficulty changes.
What is Zedternal?
Zedternal Reborn (ZR) is the base framework by FleetKiller. Zedternal Unlimited (ZU), also called ZedternalRBPerkpackage, is an extension pack with dozens of custom perks, skills and mechanics on top of it.
How it differs from vanilla KF2:
- No permanent perk levels. You build your character from scratch each session with Dosh.
- Roguelike skills. Skills are offered randomly; you pick what fits your run.
- Endless only. Waves keep coming and the difficulty and your build keep growing.
- Custom Zeds: Omega variants, Predators, Emperors, Tiny Scrakes and more.
- Special waves that change the rules, from double damage and god mode to vampire mode.
- Zed buffs: permanent stacking health, damage and speed increases as waves progress.
- Fully configurable through INI files or a visual Configurator tool.
Joining a server
You do not install anything by hand. When you join a Zedternal server, the game downloads the required Workshop items. In the server browser, open Matchmaking, then Server Browser, set the Game Mode filter to Endless and look for servers with "Zedternal" or "ZR" in the name. The first load may take a while, and later joins are instant.
The core loop
- Wave 1: you start with nothing, a 9mm pistol (or 93R depending on config), 400 Dosh by default and no upgrades.
- Trader time: use the normal trader and the Upgrade Menu to spend Dosh on perks, skills, weapon upgrades and equipment.
- Repeat: kill Zeds, earn Dosh, survive, spend. Waves get harder (more and tougher Zeds, buffs, special waves) but so do you. There is no final boss wave by default (the final wave is 255), though admins can set one.
The Upgrade Menu
Open it by walking to the trader pod during trader time and pressing PERK MENU, or by typing UPG in the console. It is normally only available in trader time, though some servers allow it during waves.
Seven tabs: Perk Upgrades, Skill Upgrades, Weapon Upgrades, Equipment Upgrades, Sidearms, Grenades and Knives. Filter by All, Available or Purchased. There is also a Skip Trader vote button and a Close button.
Perks
- You are offered a random selection of perks from the server pool (10 by default). Pick one and buy its first level.
- You can level it up to 20 and own several perks at once.
- Default price tiers cycle: 500, 600, 750, 1000, 1250, 1500, then repeat from the start. Maxing one perk from 1 to 20 costs about 18,100 Dosh.
- Examples: Reaper (ZU) gives +2 percent crit chance, +6 percent headshot damage and +3 percent movement speed per level, with Reaper's Ascension (+50 percent damage) at 10 and Death's Touch (5 percent instant kill) at 20. Warlord gives +2 percent damage, reload, fire rate and more per level.
- Some perks are static, always offered, while the others are random.
Skills
- Levelling a perk randomly unlocks one of its skills (10 per perk by default). You can only buy unlocked skills.
- Standard skills cost 300 Dosh. Deluxe skills cost 750 and unlock at perk level 6.
- Base examples: Berserker Rage, Tactical Reload, Bombardier, Airborne Agent, Pyromaniac, Magic Bullet, Rank Them Up, Tenacity.
- Skills are one of the key decisions: save Dosh for them or level a perk.
Weapon upgrades
They boost stats of the weapons you carry. The 23 default types include Damage, Headshot Damage, Clot Damage, Fleshpound Damage, Magazine Size, Rate of Fire, Reload Speed, Recoil Reduction, Penetration, Stun Power and Switch Speed. Damage always appears; others are randomly assigned per weapon (up to 40 upgrade slots rolled).
Price = 50 + (weapon base price x 0.15) x current level. A 1500 Dosh weapon costs 275 at level 1 and 500 at level 2. The maximum is level 3 per type per weapon. If you sell the weapon you lose the upgrades.
Economy and difficulty
Skill reroll: a purchased skill has a recycle icon. Clicking it sells the skill back (100 percent refund by default) and gives a new random skill from that perk's pool. The base reroll price is 50 Dosh, with an admin-set multiplier for repeats, and it can be disabled.
Dosh:
- Starting Dosh: 400.
- Kill rewards: normal Zeds about 1.2-1.25x base, large Zeds about 0.7-0.75x, with +5 percent (normal) and +8 percent (large) per extra player.
- Wave bonus: BaseDosh 660 + 20 per player + 5 per wave + 3 per perk level. Wave 10 with 4 players and 15 total perk levels gives 835.
- Late joiners get 70 percent of the average team Dosh.
- Death penalty: Normal 5 percent, Hard 10, Suicidal 20, HoE 25.
Tips: reach a decent level (5 to 10) on one perk before diversifying; skills often beat perk levels in value; weapon upgrades are a very efficient damage boost on expensive guns; Health Up and Armor Up matter in late waves.
Scaling: health, damage, speed, sprint chance and hard-attack chance grow every wave. Zeds are split into Normal (Clots, Crawlers, Stalkers, Gorefasts, Bloats, Husks, Sirens), Large (Scrakes, Fleshpounds, Quarter Pounds, bosses) and Omega (custom enhanced variants), each with its own curves. Kill rewards fall slightly each wave, down to a floor.
Events
Special waves are random modifiers with their own wave ranges. Some waves can have two. Examples:
- Positive: Double Damage, God Mode, Unlimited Ammo, Insta Kill, Dosh, Gift from Above.
- Negative: Acceleration, Haemorrhage, Mechanical Problem, Locked (no trader after the wave), Lethargic.
- Neutral: Poundamonium, Gored Fast, Popcorn, Clot Buster, Emperor, Predator, Five Alarm Siren, Tiny Terror, Titans, Bobble Zed, Featherweight, Fireworks, Earthquake, Phoenix, Virus, Vampire, Regeneration, Shrink, Pop, Chaos and Division.
Admins can force a specific special wave on a specific wave number.
Zed buffs activate on configured waves (for example 5, 9, 13, 17, 21...) and stay on and stack: Health, Damage, Speed, Spawn Rate, Beefcake, and zed-specific ones like Crawler Faster, Fleshpound Stronger, Siren Heal or Husk Suicide Rate. Killing buffed Zeds can award bonus Dosh. The late-game challenge is outpacing the buffs.
Trader, voting, HUD
- Trader: weapons rotate in each wave instead of all being available at once (some are static). Ammo, armor and grenade prices are configurable, as are default sidearm (9mm, 93R or custom), grenade pool and trader time.
- Voting: skip trader, pause game and map vote (only Endless-capable maps).
- HUD: perk card stack, skill icons, special wave banner, perk trackers, optional stat overlay (
StatOverlay), and floating damage numbers. - Scoreboard: a custom canvas scoreboard showing names, perks, levels, kills, Dosh and ping.
Console commands
Open the console with the tilde key. Player commands:
UPGopens the Upgrade Menu.ZRSetScoreBoardSize <1-255>(aliasZRSetSB) overrides the scoreboard font size;ZRClearScoreBoardSize(aliasZRClearSB) resets it;ZRDebugScoreBoard(aliasZRDebugSB) prints resolution info.DKHudScale <value>scales the custom HUD (0 auto, 1 is 720p baseline, 1.5 is 150 percent, 2 is 200 percent).mutate rerollperks costshows the price to reroll all perks, andmutate rerollperksdoes it.
With cheats enabled: SpawnZed <name>, SpawnHumanPawn, SpawnHumanPawnWep <path>, GetZedNameList, GetWeaponList, GetCharIndexList. Spawnable names include Clot, Slasher, Rioter, Cyst, Gorefast, Crawler, Stalker, Bloat, Husk, Siren, the custom Omega variants, Scrake, Emperor, Fleshpound, Predator and the bosses Abomination, King_Fleshpound, Hans, Matriarch and Patriarch.
Scoreboard font fix
If the scoreboard is too small or large, run ZRDebugScoreBoard to see viewport and font data, then ZRSetScoreBoardSize 14. Typical values: 12-14 at 1080p, 14-16 at 1440p, 16-20 at 4K. The override is saved in ZedternalReborn_LocalPreferences.ini.

Configurator tool
The Configurator is an HTML tool you open in a browser. Import any of the six INI files (it auto-detects which one), edit with toggles, sliders and difficulty-coloured columns, then Export and copy the file to the server config directory. It supports searching and filtering by mod pack and adding custom perks, skills, upgrades, special waves, zed buffs and map settings.
Mod packs
- ZR: the base framework with the 10 vanilla perks (10 skills each), all weapon upgrades, equipment, special waves, zed buffs and config.
- DK (Zedternal Unlimited): 35+ custom perks, including the Symbiote family (Symbiote, Riot, Hivemind, Agony, Cinder, Parasite), mythical perks (Reaper, Archangel, Wendigo, Medusa, Hydra), specialists (Artificer, Scavenger, Tycoon, Hacker, Forge Warden, Cryophilite), combat perks (Warlord, Maniac, Daredevil, Gambler, Special Agent, Headhunter, Taskmaster, Bulwark) and elemental ones (Pyrokinetic, Venomancer, Frost, Voodoo, Time Traveler). Each has level 10 and 20 milestone abilities.
- PSY: admin and specialty perks, including cheat-style test perks.
- HOWDY: additional community content.
Troubleshooting
- No upgrade menu: wait for trader time, or type
UPG. If the server disabled the command, ask the admin. - "Perk upgrade X is not paired with a valid Perk upgrade" in logs: a skill references a perk that is not loaded. Check the pack's
.uand_Resources.upkfiles are inKFGame/BrewedPC/. - Weapons missing from the trader: the rotating system unlocks more each wave; or they are in the Disabled list; Precious variants may be hidden.
- Crash when a Zed spawns, or infinite recursion: check mod compatibility and update to the latest version.
- Zeds stuck or not spawning: check Zed Stuck Threshold and Timeout (default 4 Zeds, 150 seconds), or try All Traders.
- Config not applying: restart the server, edit the right file, avoid whitespace around
=, and check the log for "ZR Config:" messages. - Wrong player count in the browser: a known vanilla issue, mostly fixed by Zedternal.
The special wave list holds at most 256 entries because of replication limits. For the latest information check the Steam Workshop page and community Discord.
