KF2 Medic Mentality: Weapons, Loadouts, Skills and Tactics

This chapter of Tamari's KF2 Survival Handbook is a long, opinionated look at the Field Medic, written by a player with thousands of hours. It is a logistics-category guide for any skill level. The author warns that some weapon and skill details predate later updates, so use the numbers as a snapshot and focus on the reasoning. A good Medic controls the pace of a match: teammates can fight on their own terms and play more aggressively when they trust the healing.

Medic weapons

HMTech-101 Pistol

HMTech-101 pistol HMTech-101 Pistol.

Tier 1, 1 kg, 200 dosh. The starting weapon and part of nearly every loadout. Great for healing one or two players, weak on later waves. Upgrades improve syringe recharge, but beyond Tier 2 they add weight, so upgrade once at most.

HMTech-201 SMG

HMTech-201 SMG HMTech-201 SMG.

Tier 2, 3 kg, 650 dosh. A full-auto step up that adds a few extra darts early on. Replace it with a higher tier weapon as soon as you can; sometimes you can skip it.

HRG Healthrower

HRG Healthrower HRG Healthrower.

Tier 3, 7 kg, 1000 dosh. Streams healing gas for group healing and buffing, panics Zeds during kites, kills trash and reveals cloaked Stalkers. Short range, and it only heals players standing in the gas. It still fires up to 2 darts.

HMTech-301 Shotgun

HMTech-301 shotgun HMTech-301 Shotgun.

Tier 3, 6 kg, 1100 dosh. One of the better Medic weapons: real stopping power with dart healing. Headshots decapitate most small Zeds in one round. Replace the 201 with it quickly.

Hemogoblin

Hemogoblin Hemogoblin.

Tier 3, 8 kg, 1100 dosh. Applies Bleed: affected Zeds move 30 percent slower, attack 25 percent slower and deal 30 percent less damage. Useful against Large Zeds, but its damage is weak and it is usually eclipsed; it can help in the boss wave.

Hemoclobber

Hemoclobber Hemoclobber.

Tier 3, 4 kg, 1200 dosh. A Medic and Berserker crossover: melee with an alt-fire that releases healing gas on a successful hit. Short range and hard to hit teammates reliably. A decent front-line weapon in early waves.

HMTech-401 Assault Rifle

HMTech-401 assault rifle HMTech-401 Assault Rifle.

Tier 4, 7 kg, 1500 dosh. Unparalleled single-target healing, up to 3 darts in quick succession. Strong damage too: decapitates most small Zeds in one round and kills Crawlers and Stalkers in one shot. Heavy recoil, so tap fire in short bursts.

HMTech-501 Grenade Rifle

HMTech-501 grenade rifle HMTech-501 Grenade Rifle.

Tier 5, 8 kg, 2000 dosh, cannot be upgraded. Gives up to 10 extra Medic grenades, deployable far beyond a throw, and great for group healing, kiting and Last Man Standing. It cannot fire darts, so pair it with a dart weapon.

Off-perk weapons

Double-barreled Boomstick Double-barreled Boomstick.

  • Double-barreled Boomstick (Tier 2, 5 kg, 750): huge burst damage, high stumble power, light weight, and Recoil Force Boosting for movement, evasion, Goomba Stomps and reduced fall damage.

Crossbow Crossbow.

  • Crossbow (Tier 2, 6 kg, 650): high stun power against Large Zeds, light, great for starting fights (unreliable against Fleshpounds).

Rail Gun Rail Gun.

  • Rail Gun (Tier 4, 10 kg, 1500): stuns Large Zeds and deals lots of damage, but the weight limits how many Medic weapons you can carry.
  • Freezethrower (Tier 3, 7 kg, 1100): freezes Zeds, an excellent initiator, but low damage.

Loadouts

The author stresses that you cannot judge a weapon by Tier alone and encourages experimenting. Personal suggestions:

Loadout 1 Loadout 1: HMTech-101, 301 and 401.

  1. 101, 301, 401: the go-to for Survival, especially Hell on Earth and late Endless. Plenty of darts at any range, buffs are cheap, decent stopping power, and every weapon can heal without swapping.

Loadout 2 Loadout 2: HMTech-101, Double-barreled Boomstick and 401.

  1. 101, Boomstick, 401: the fun loadout, favored in Endless. The Boomstick can take down Scrakes alone and Goomba Stomps can shut down bosses.

Loadout 3 Loadout 3: HMTech-401 and 501.

  1. 401 and 501: the most balanced healing set: single target darts plus area gas. Weak at pure stopping power versus Scrakes and Fleshpounds.

Loadout 4 Loadout 4: Healthrower and 501.

  1. Healthrower and 501: almost all gas, ideal for kiting or when the team is surrounded; short healing range.

Skills

The author uses the left side of the tree almost exclusively, because those skills heal and buff.

Medic buff skills Adrenaline Shot, Focus Injection and Coagulant Booster.

  • Adrenaline Shot: +10 percent movement speed for 5 seconds per dart, stacking up to 30 percent.
  • Focus Injection: +5 percent damage for 5 seconds per dart, stacking to 20 percent.
  • Coagulant Booster: +10 percent damage resistance for 5 seconds per dart, stacking to 30 percent.

The right side suits Solo or early waves (Battle Surgeon for extra damage). In multiplayer, if you only want damage, another perk fits better. Coagulant Booster saves a dying teammate more reliably than extra damage does.

Preventative medicine

Preventing damage makes the job easier.

  • Bash cancelling: bashing (V) interrupts a Zed's attack, such as a Scrake behind a Sharpshooter or a Siren scream.
  • Goomba stomping: incapacitates any Zed or boss; use the Boomstick or map props for height.
  • Bodyblocking: Medics are tough, so stand in front of an attack, soak a Husk rocket or de-rage a Fleshpound. Some Zeds ignore you and keep chasing their target.
  • Knife parrying also saves health and armor.
  • Healing gas: from Medic grenades, Airborne Agent and the Hemoclobber. It heals teammates, damages Zeds, reveals Stalkers and can cause Poison Panic. Drop one on a Sharpshooter to protect him.

Combative medicine

  • Recon: your speed lets you scout from high ground and call out Large Zeds early.
  • Aggro management: draw Zeds onto yourself so teammates can shoot safely, but sometimes let them hold aggro so Sharpshooters get clean shots. On Hell on Earth, peel Scrakes (which rage after only 10 percent damage) away from a pack to avoid collateral rage.
  • Starting fights: use the Crossbow, Freezethrower or Boomstick against Large Zeds.
  • Cropdusting: with Airborne Agent you release gas for 8 seconds each time ZED Time starts or extends; run into small Zeds for free kills.
  • Waging war: during downtime or when the team is healthy, help fight. A grenade in a doorway creates a deathwall for small Zeds, and the 501 can bounce grenades off walls and ceilings.

Self-preserving medicine

  • Positioning: stand where you can see the squad (high ground), surrounded by teammates. Zeds cannot normally spawn in your line of sight, so standing in a doorway blocks spawns. Stay near an exit.
  • Escaping: throw a grenade at your feet when surrounded by small Zeds. Against Large Zeds, jump repeatedly so incoming damage launches you upward (Damage Force Boosting) or use Boomstick Recoil Force Boosting.
  • Last Man Standing: save grenades, buff yourself with Adrenaline Shot against the Patriarch or Hans, use bash cancels, cornerhugging and looping, avoid small rooms. Move dropped teammate weapons (they despawn after 5 minutes) to reset their timer.

Healing priority

  • Fire: healing a burning player halves the remaining burn time and per-tick damage, so they take about a quarter of the remaining fire damage. Grenades can put out several players at once, and the effect stacks.
  • Slower perks: Support, Sharpshooter and Demolitionist tend to take more damage in kites and fast waves.
  • Ultimatums: when the team splits, weigh whether the player is a Medic, the perk level, who is carrying, group size and whether the perk provides something the team needs.

FAQ

Which Medic skill side does the author recommend?
Mostly the left side of the tree, because Adrenaline Shot, Focus Injection and Coagulant Booster are the buffs that make healing effective on higher difficulties. Right side skills can help on early waves or in Solo.
What is the author's go-to Medic loadout?
The HMTech-101, 301 and 401 together, used in Survival and especially on Hell on Earth and late Endless. Each weapon can fire healing darts, so you can always heal without swapping.
Does healing put out fire?
Yes. Healing a burning player, with darts, gas or the syringe, halves the remaining burn time and the damage per tick, so they take only about a quarter of the remaining fire damage. Multiple heals stack the effect.
