KF2 Specimen Files: Husk Fireball, Suicide and Statistics

The Husk carries a Horzine fireball launcher and exists to make fights hotter. Alone it is easy to kill, but it usually comes with other ZEDs. This page paraphrases the community "Specimen Files 2.0" entry from late 2015; numbers reflect the game then.

The Husk The Husk.

Behavior

The Husk walks toward a player and occasionally stops to fire its fireball launcher. It switches targets if the target is not actively shooting it or another player is doing more damage. Getting too close on Normal or Hard makes it root itself and use three melee attacks; on Suicidal and Hell on Earth it uses a wide-range flamethrower within 5 meters, which also hurts other ZEDs. If its fuel tank takes enough shots it explodes, killing the Husk and damaging nearby ZEDs but not players.

Below 15% health it enters the suicide state: it sprints at its target and, within 2.8 meters, points the launcher down and overcharges it. The explosion does massive damage to players and ZEDs, and on most higher difficulties it instantly kills a player regardless of health or perk. It sprints automatically when five ZEDs are left but only suicides after dropping below 15%. It often starts friendly fire because of fireball splash and its flamethrower.

Strategy

  • If it is not facing you and stands near a group, shoot the fuel tank to blow it up among other ZEDs and save ammo.
  • It leads its shots toward the chest area, so strafe back and forth to ruin its aim.
  • On Suicidal and Hell on Earth do not get close unless you can kill it fast, or it uses the flamethrower.
  • A Husk sprinting at teammates without stopping to shoot is going to suicide. Make it your top priority.

By perk

  • Berserker: closes distance and kills it easily, unless it is already about to suicide in your face, when you have to attack and hope.
  • Commando: assault rifle headshots kill it quickly; after a headshot kill ignore it. The fuel tank is also a quick target.
  • Support: shotgun headshots work; the tank may be killed outright by shotgun penetration rather than exploding.
  • Field Medic: heal burning teammates; a Medic can charge it with a shotgun or assault rifle, but low-tier Medic weapons are weak.
  • Demolitionist: not a priority since it takes a few grenades; clear trash for teammates instead.
  • Firebug: takes little from its fire and Firebug weapons are poor against it. The trench gun at close range works, and the microwave gun is good because Husks do not resist it.
  • Gunslinger: a few headshots with low-tier guns, or one with a .500 magnum.

FAQ

When does a Husk suicide?
When its health falls below 15% it enters a suicide state, sprints at its target and detonates its overcharged launcher within 2.8 meters. On higher difficulties this kills a player instantly.
Does shooting the fuel tank hurt players?
No. The tank explosion kills the Husk and damages nearby ZEDs but does not damage players, according to a community note.
Which perk handles Husks best?
Gunslinger with a .500 magnum (one headshot) and Commando assault rifles are effective. Firebugs mostly resist Husk fire, but the microwave gun works because Husks do not resist it.
