Chronicle 4: Scions of Destiny

Third class, Heroes and the lands of Goddard and Rune

After half a year of waiting, NCSoft released its next update - Lineage 2 Chronicle 4: Scions of Destiny. The C4 test server launched in Korea on September 22, 2005; players on Korean servers with active accounts could take part in testing. On the North American (NA) servers and the European Teon server, the update was expected at the end of November or beginning of December 2005. This overview is based on the preliminary information about the changes.

Game system, Noblesse and manor

Maximum level and third class

  • The maximum level for characters and subclasses was raised to 78.
  • A third class change quest was introduced, and characters can become Noblesse and Heroes. To become a Hero you have to take part in the Olympiad.
  • The third class is available from level 76. It strengthens existing skills, adds a line of new ones and lets you develop skills through the enchant system. Unlike the first and second class changes, the third one offers no choice of path; instead it strengthens the character, perfecting the existing class.

Noblesse

Players who have raised a subclass to level 75 and completed a special quest can become Noblesse (see the Noblesse quest walkthrough). Noblesse receive special skills and spells, most of them intended for raids and sieges. Noblesse status applies to the main class and all subclasses, so the new skills are available in any of them.

Manor

  • The periods when a castle lord can sell seeds and buy crops were changed, as well as the time when money for production and purchases is withdrawn from the castle treasury.
  • Seed sale prices and crop purchase prices can be set from 20:00 to 8:00 every day. Outside that window they cannot be changed.
  • Production and purchase costs are deducted from the castle treasury at 8:00.
  • All crops bought and processed on the previous day are placed in the clan warehouse at 20:00, when the new manor day begins. Money not spent on crop purchases is returned there too.
  • The number of crops a castle can put up for purchase was changed.
  • A new seed type was added - Cova Seed, for high-level players and monsters.
  • All castles can produce any items - quantities are limited only by the amount of crops purchased.
  • The number of regular and alternative seeds offered for sale was changed.
  • The ratio between seed sales and crop purchases was changed (separately for regular and alternative seeds): more crops can be bought than seeds are sold.

Other

A new free ship route was added between Rune Harbor and Gludin Harbor.

Hero system and the Grand Olympiad

Hero system

Any Noblesse who wins the Grand Olympiad - a pure PvP competition among Noblesse - can become a Hero. Fights between players take place over a month, and at the end of the month the best fighters in each class are determined. They are awarded the title of Hero, gain access to epic items and other accessories, and receive special auras.

  • Determining Heroes. Over the month, players fight each other and gain or lose points. The one with the most points becomes a Hero. The Olympiad starts at 0:00 on the 1st of every calendar month.
  • Choosing the Hero. The Hero is chosen among main classes: the character with the most points who has fought at least 5 PvP matches in the Olympiad. For the month after the win, the character enjoys Hero bonuses; in the second month they become an ex-Hero. So the same player can become a Hero once every 2 months.
  • Top participants list. All Noblesse can view the top 10 Olympiad players at the Olympiad Administrator NPC. Noblesse with 4 matches or fewer are not listed. If several players are tied, up to 15 characters may appear on the list. The list is sorted by name rather than score, so the winner's name is only known once it is announced.

Grand Olympiad

Noblesse who have the third class can take part. The Olympiad consists of one-on-one PvP matches between characters of the same class or of different classes. Wins earn points, and the player with the most points is declared the winner.

Competition rules:

  • There are two match types: two characters of the same class, and two characters of different classes.
  • To take part, talk to the Olympiad Administrator NPC. Matches run from 15:00 to 3:00, and registration is possible only during those hours.
  • Registered players are paired at random, and both opponents are teleported to the arena.
  • 30 seconds before the match, a warning appears in the system message window, after which the opponents are moved to the match area.
  • A match lasts no more than 3 minutes. The player whose HP drops to 0 loses, but the character does not actually die and gets no experience penalty. If nobody "dies" within 3 minutes, the one who dealt more damage wins.
  • After the match, each player is told the result and their new score, and both are moved to the nearest town.
  • If a player leaves the game before the match ends (voluntarily or due to a disconnect), they lose. If the server restarts during a match, the match is void.
  • Before a match, characters have HP, MP and CP fully restored and all buffs and debuffs removed. Summoned pets are recalled, while servitors and cubics are moved to the arena with their owner; buffs on servitors are removed too.

Important notes:

  • Only main classes can take part. If a player switches to a subclass after registering, they are removed from the lists.
  • A player who is in a party when teleported to the arena is automatically removed from the party.
  • A player with 0 points can no longer take part in the Olympiad.
  • During a match only Soulshot, Spiritshot / Blessed Spiritshot, Sound / Echo Crystal, Energy Stone and Firecrackers may be used.
  • Recall, Party Recall and similar skills cannot be used.

Scoring:

  • On first registration a participant receives 18 points, then 3 more points each week.
  • On a win, all of the loser's points go to the winner.
  • You can check your score at the Olympiad Administrator NPC.
  • After the Olympiad ends, a player with 50 or more points can exchange them at the Olympiad Administrator for Noblesse Gate Passes at a rate of 1 point = 1000 Noblesse Gate Passes.
  • Noblesse Gate Passes can be spent on items at the Olympiad Administrator or used for teleports at a Gatekeeper.

Watching matches:

  • Matches can be watched via the Broadcasting Tower.
  • You can see who is registered for the Olympiad and the names of the fighters.
  • In spectator mode you see the opponents' HP, MP, CP and buffs/debuffs, as well as the skills they use and their critical hits.
  • When you start watching, you are moved to the arena. If you do not leave the arena after the match ends, you can keep watching other matches.
  • When you leave spectator mode, you return to the town where you started watching. You are also moved there if you log out or the server restarts while watching.
  • Watching is free.

Skills

Changes to existing skills

  • Expertise S (the ability to wear S-grade items) is now available only from level 75.
  • If a character is already affected by Sleep, Hold (e.g. Dryad Root), Paralyze or a similar spell, casting the same type of spell again has no effect - you can no longer keep a target permanently rooted, asleep or paralyzed by refreshing the effect. For this reason, a character casting such a spell on a "purple" player already under its effect does not get flagged.
  • You no longer have to be in the same party to resurrect a character. The character being resurrected can accept or decline.
  • Fatal Strike power was increased.
  • Guts and Frenzy now activate at HP below 30% of maximum (previously 20%), and their duration was increased from 30 to 90 seconds.
  • Cancel's success rate was lowered, but its reuse time was shortened.

Skill enchanting

High-level players can enchant skills much like enchanting items, but with special rules:

  • Normally, a new skill level makes a skill stronger but more expensive in MP. Enchanting does not follow this rule: the player chooses which parameter to improve from a list of available options.
  • Each skill has its own list of enchant routes - for example, shorter reuse, longer duration or lower MP cost. Once a route is chosen, it cannot be changed, and a skill cannot be enchanted along several routes at once.
  • Skill enchanting is not limited by character level: a skill can be enchanted up to its maximum level.
  • Enchanting requires XP, SP and a Titan's Secret Scroll. The scroll is needed only when choosing the route; after that only XP and SP are consumed. If you do not have enough XP and SP above the start of your current level, you cannot enchant - for example, a level 74 character at 0.00% cannot enchant (you cannot lose a level by enchanting).
  • An attempt can fail - in that case the skill drops to +0: the enchant level resets, not the skill level itself.

Third class skills

Skills were added for characters of level 76+ who have the third class.

New summoner skills

Warlock, Elemental Summoner and Phantom Summoner received new servitors and servitor-related skills (buffs), plus a skill that summons cubics for the whole party. Necromancer also received new servitor-related skills. The new skills are available from level 40, right after the second class change.

New common skills

Common skills are learned from the Fishing NPC. To obtain and raise them you need not SP and books but special Proof of Fishery items: you get them by catching a specific item while fishing and exchanging it with the same NPC. Raising any of these skills requires a Voucher of Fishing.

These skills expand the number of slots in the inventory, recipe book, warehouse, sell and buy lists:

New items

Hero epic items

Once a Noblesse becomes a Hero, they can obtain epic items for as long as they remain a Hero. They are handed out by the Olympiad Guide NPC.

S-grade items

  • S-grade weapons, armor and accessories were added for players of level 75+; S-grade can now be worn only from level 75.
  • S-grade items must be unsealed at the Mammon Blacksmith.
  • To add a special ability (SA) to an S-grade weapon you need a level 13 soul crystal. It can be obtained from a level 12 crystal by completing the quest "This moment, may strength weigh on the blade".

Unsealing A-grade accessories

A-grade earrings, rings and necklaces can (and should) now be unsealed: unsealed accessories give a bigger magic defense bonus.

New SAs for C and B-grade weapons

  • C-grade: Stick of Faith, Stick of Eternity, Nirvana Axe, Club of Nature, Mace of Underworld, Inferno Staff, Pole Axe.
  • B-grade: Sword of Valhalla.

New scrolls

  • Scroll of Escape - (town name). Takes you from anywhere in Aden to the town named on the scroll. These scrolls are sold by Gatekeepers or made in a clan hall if the player has a Dimension Diamond. The diamonds are rewarded for the first two second-class quests.
  • Blessed Scroll: Enchant Weapon / Armor. Unlike regular scrolls, a failed attempt does not break the item but resets it to +0. These scrolls do not increase the enchant success rate.

Wedding outfits

Wedding outfits were added: on male characters they look like tailcoats, on female characters like wedding dresses. They are rewarded by a quest for players of level 60+. While wearing a wedding outfit you cannot use skills or spells, and your equipped weapon is removed.

Clan accessories

  • Castle lord's crown. The leader of a castle-owning clan can obtain it from an NPC in the castle right after the siege. You cannot get more than one crown; it cannot be traded, sold or dropped (even as a PK).
  • Castle owner's circlet. Available to all members of the castle-owning clan. Players from allied clans in the alliance cannot get it.
  • Clan crest shield. Clans owning a castle or clan hall can buy special shields and decorate them with the clan's crest. Image requirements: 64x64 pixels, 256 colors, BMP format. It is uploaded via an option on the Clan tab.

Noblesse and Hero circlets

A character receives the Noblesse circlet as soon as they complete the Noblesse quest. The Hero circlet can only be obtained by becoming a Hero.

Hair accessories

Hair accessories were added that both male and female characters can wear - for example, bunny ears. Hair pins are available to female characters only.

Unique boss accessories

Some raid bosses drop unique rings, earrings and necklaces that give extra bonuses on top of good magic defense: Ant Queen, Orfen, Zaken, Baium, Antharas, Valakas.

Recipes

  • Recipes now stack: several identical recipes take one inventory slot.
  • Regular Craft Recipes were added - expensive items that can be obtained only by fishing or made in a clan hall.

Other items

  • Two music crystals were added - Mendelssohn's Wedding March and Happy Birthday 2 U.
  • Soulshots, Spiritshots and Blessed Spiritshots for pets were added. They are sold by the Pet Manager.

New territories and monsters

North of Aden, new regions were added - Goddard and Rune, with the towns of Goddard Castle Town and Rune Castle Town and Goddard Castle. They are home to monsters of level 75 and above, and the developers promised that the humanoid monsters would be highly intelligent and at times hard to tell apart from player characters.

Castle

A new castle was added - Goddard Castle. It stands on top of a plateau, which makes it look like an impregnable fortress. Rune Castle does not exist in this update.

Territories

LocationRegionDescription
Barka Silenos StationGoddardSouth of Goddard Castle and west of Goddard Castle Town. Home of the Barka Silenos - the strongest Silenos in the game
Ketra Orc OutpostGoddardNorth of Goddard Castle Town. Home of the Ketra Orcs - the strongest orcs in the game
Wall of ArgosGoddardEast of Goddard Castle Town. Behind the wall languishes Argos, the thousand-eyed giant, said to have been imprisoned here centuries ago for angering Einhasad. A maze of canyons similar to Dragon Valley, but with much stronger monsters. Tomb of Kings can be reached only through this zone
Imperial GraveyardGoddardThe tomb of the greatest kings of Aden and Elmore. The slaves who built the road to the tomb were walled in after the work was done, and their unfriendly souls still roam the graveyard. Some rooms can be entered only by a party, after clearing the previous room
Hot SpringsGoddardThe hot springs of Elmore in northern Goddard, famous thanks to the nearby volcano Brazier of Gods. Local monsters cast special debuffs - a mix of positive and negative effects (with more negatives). The only cure is bathing in the springs
Brazier of GodsGoddardA volcano in northeastern Goddard. The Path of Fire is the only road to the lair of the dragon Valakas. Monsters here drop items useful for raids
Garden of BeastsGoddardThe royal menagerie around Goddard Castle Town: the monsters look like familiar ones but have more skills and hit much harder
Gateway of GhostsRuneOn the border of Goddard and Rune. In ancient times the armies of Goddard and Rune clashed here, and at night the souls and bodies of the fallen still wander about, their cries echoing over the Swamp of Screams
Valley of SaintsRuneNorth of Rune Castle Town. An ancient burial ground that became holy in the days when Einhasad took part in the life of Elmore and Aden. The monsters have a wide range of unique skills
Wild Animal PastureRuneFormer pastures where animals were bred for the king's army. The wild animals could never be tamed, and the pastures were abandoned. A player can tame such an animal temporarily: the pet follows the character and fights on their side until the player logs out
Forest of the DeadRuneEast of Rune Castle Town. A cursed forest where loyalists brutally crushed the rebellion of Baron Von Hellman in ancient times. It is populated by the undead - zombies, vampires and even liches. Beware of corpses: necromancer players and even monsters can "explode" them
Swamp of ScreamsRuneEast of Rune Castle Town, beyond the Forest of the Dead. Besides the ghosts of fallen warriors, a strong Stakato tribe lives here
Dimensional Gap-A dungeon tied to the Seven Signs but completely unlike the others: the return and use of the Seals tore the fabric of existence, and demons from other worlds poured into Aden. You can get in by winning the Festival of Darkness or by obtaining special items in the Catacombs and Necropolises. The party is teleported to a random room; with luck it can be the room of a raid boss that drops rare items
Field of Silence, Alligator Island-Monsters with special skill sets were added

For more on the Festival of Darkness and the Catacombs, see Seven Signs.

The Ketra and Barka quest

An unusual quest is available in Barka Silenos Station and Ketra Orc Outpost. The Barka Silenos and the Ketra Orcs have long been at war, and the player can help one side:

  • helping the Ketra Orcs, the player hunts in Barka Silenos Station, raising the orcs' trust;
  • fighting for the Barka Silenos, the player hunts in Ketra Orc Outpost, raising the Silenos' trust.

Having earned enough respect, the player gains access to the shops of the chosen side's settlement.

Fire Dragon Valakas

  • A new boss: the Fire Dragon Valakas, the first of the ancient dragons created by the goddess Shilen. Its lair lies in the heart of the Brazier of Gods volcano. It is much smaller than the famous Antharas, but far more dangerous and cunning.
  • To reach the lair you must get to the Corridor of Fire in the upper levels of the Brazier of Gods. Before that you have to complete the quest Into the Flames, given by Lookout of Valakas Kline in the Brazier of Gods. The quest rewards a single-use pass to the Corridor of Fire.
  • Two mini-bosses appear in the Corridor of Fire - Kin of Valakas and Chief Gatekeeper of Valakas. They can drop special items that help in the fight against the dragon.
  • Stepping into lava in Valakas' cave deals huge damage.
  • No more than 200 players can take part in a Valakas raid - the lair simply cannot hold more.

New monsters of Goddard and Rune

  • Barka Silenos - Barka Silenos Station (Goddard).
  • Ketra Orcs - Ketra Orc Outpost (Goddard).
  • Argos, the thousand-eyed giant - Wall of Argos (Goddard).
  • Various ghosts - Imperial Graveyard (Goddard), Gateway of Ghosts and Swamp of Screams (Rune).
  • Zombies, vampires, liches - Forest of the Dead (Rune).
  • Demons and a raid boss - Dimensional Gap.
  • Tamable animals - Wild Animal Pasture (Rune).

In addition, many unique monsters with their own stats, drops and debuffs were added to the new territories.

Castles, sieges and clan halls

Castles

  • Teleporter NPCs were removed from castles (not to be confused with Gatekeepers).
  • To leave or enter a castle you have to talk to the doorkeeper. The clan leader can give clan members the right to use teleportation.

Clan halls bought at auction

  • 5 clan halls were added in Giran Castle Town and 4 in Goddard Castle Town. All the new halls are A-class. Clan halls can now be furnished.
  • Leaders of clans owning clan halls in Aden can now ride wyverns - to do so, talk to the doorkeeper NPC.
  • Item production was added to the clan halls of Dion Castle Town.
  • The location of clan halls on the town map can be checked at the Auctioneer NPC.

Contested clan halls (Partisan Hideaway, Bandit Stronghold)

  • The ownership period was increased from 1 week to 2, so you have to fight for them less often.
  • The same upgrades as regular clan halls were added: lost experience recovery, buffs, item production.
  • A Wyvern Manager NPC was added to Devastated Castle - the leader of the owning clan can fly a wyvern.
  • Bandit Stronghold and Devastated Castle can produce Scroll: Enchant Armor.
  • You can now register for the Bandit Stronghold contest not only via the quest but also simply by paying a lot of adena.
  • The list of participants in the Bandit Stronghold contest is available from the Messenger NPC.
  • In contested clan halls and castles, the price of teleports to hunting grounds was changed to 500 adena - the same as in regular clan halls.

Other

  • A clan hall with a level 3 upgrade can produce Pet Tickets and recipes for various potions, fish oil, accessories, dyes, hairstyle change potions and facelift potions.
  • Clan halls and castles whose leaders can fly wyverns sell wyvern food.

Sieges

  • With the new castle, the number of castles that can be besieged at the same time was increased to 4 per day.
  • Mercenaries can now be bought only during the week before the siege, in the Seven Signs competition results period. This fixes a bug where the Seal of Strife belonged to the Revolutionaries of Dusk, but the Lords of Dawn could still buy strong mercenaries in advance.
  • The number of mercenaries that can be bought was changed - exact numbers are available from the Mercenary Manager NPC.
  • Clans registered as defenders cannot break castle gates and walls. If defenders summon a golem and destroy the gates or walls, it will be treated as bug abuse and punished by banning the whole clan.

Pets and servitors

The update was jokingly nicknamed "Age of Pets" - and pets did get a lot of changes.

New pets

Three new pets were added - Baby Buffalo, Baby Kookaburra and Baby Cougar. They can be obtained through quests or by exchanging a special ticket made in a clan hall. These pets eat Baby Spice; they are weaker in strength and abilities than the existing pets (wolves and hatchlings).

Hatchling and strider changes

  • Hatchlings used to be divided into regular (wind), defensive (star) and leveling (twilight). The categories are now fighter (wind), mage (star) and runner (twilight).
  • All hatchlings received new skills matching their new categories.

Pet and servitor rules

  • If the owner restarts, the pet returns to its summoning item. However, if the pet is dead when the owner restarts, it does not return and stays on the ground for 20 minutes, after which both the pet and its summoning item disappear. If the pet is dead, the 20 minutes have not passed yet and the owner logs out, the pet returns to the summoning item but will have 0 HP when summoned next time.
  • If the pet died and the server restarted, the pet returns to its summoning item and will have 0 HP when summoned next time.
  • Fixed a bug where servitors with poison attacks gained more experience than they should.
  • Fixed a bug where the owner did not enter combat mode when their servitor attacked an opponent, and vice versa. Now when a servitor attacks a character or another servitor, all participants - servitors and their owners - enter combat mode.
  • When the owner uses a Scroll of Escape, the servitor or pet automatically follows, even if it was given the STAY command.
  • A DISMISS command was added for servitors, letting you release one you no longer need.
  • A MOVE command was added for servitors and pets: the pet moves to the selected target without attacking it.
  • When a pet levels up, the same animation as for a player is shown.

User interface

To make the game more convenient for both newcomers and veterans, the following interface changes were made:

  • Ingame recording. The C4 client has a built-in recorder and player, so you can record sieges, PvP and other events without third-party programs that load the system. One minute of footage takes about 35 KB. Playback starts from the login screen - either in the original view (original camera angles and zoom) or with a free camera and adjustable zoom. Replays show the Lineage II and Chronicle 4: Scions of Destiny logos. A replay can then be captured to a regular video format, for example with Fraps.
  • System message window. System messages are shown in a new window above the chat window. To stop them appearing in the chat, turn off the System message option in the chat settings. The system message window can be hidden in the options, but it cannot be resized.
  • Chat window split by channel. The General, Trade, Party, Clan and Alliance tabs can be split into separate windows by dragging a tab anywhere on screen. To merge them back, drag the tabs onto the main chat window. The separate windows cannot be resized.
  • Manor interface. The manor window was enlarged and got a search function: you can check seed buy and sell conditions in other towns, sell seeds in other regions (with a 5% tax), and view crop reward information in a dedicated window.
  • Party CP gauge. You can now see party members' CP as well as HP and MP (without numbers).
  • Mini-map. Party members are shown on the mini-map; selecting a party member centers the map on them. The maps of Elmore and Aden were merged into one.
  • Clan penalty window. A Penalty tab was added to the clan window (Alt+N), showing penalties imposed on the clan and alliance - their type and expiry date (a player leaving the clan, a clan leaving the alliance, dissolving an alliance and so on).
  • Trade window. When selling non-adena items or ordering from a crafting NPC, quantities for several items can now be entered at once in a single dialog.
  • Region names. The region name caption that appears as you travel can now be turned off.
  • Party matching. Up to 12 people can join a party matching "room". The minimized icon blinks when someone joins the room or writes a message. When a room is created, the party window opens only for the leader; when the leader changes, only for the new leader. The party matching window shows the names of party leaders.
  • Target window. The target window can be resized.
  • Buff timer. Hovering over a buff shows the remaining time in the tooltip, and a minute before the effect ends a timer appears in the corner of the icon.
  • Weight in numbers. Hovering over the weight gauge shows the current and maximum values, for example 74900 / 234000.
  • Recipe book. The recipe book moved from the inventory to the skills window, and registered recipes can be placed on the shortcut bar. The bar shows the icon of the item the recipe creates, with a hammer drawn in the corner so you do not confuse it with the item itself.
  • Warehouses. Personal and clan warehouses show the number of free slots, like the inventory.
  • Selling sets. Besides selling several items as a package at a single price, you can also sell several identical items in one slot.
  • Auto-run. Pressing Num Lock makes the character run forward without holding the movement key.
  • Movement marker. The marker showing where the character will run after clicking the ground was changed: it is now a falling blue sphere.
  • Resurrection. Players outside your party can be resurrected. The player being resurrected is told who is resurrecting them and can accept or decline.
  • Esc key. Previously, pressing Esc while using a skill canceled both the skill and the target. Now: if a target is selected but no skill is being used, Esc clears the target; if a skill is being cast, Esc interrupts it but keeps the target; if you close the target window or change targets while casting, the cast is not interrupted - you have to press Esc for that.
  • Enchant window. To prevent accidentally enchanting the wrong item, after choosing the scroll and the item a confirmation window appears showing information about the selected item.
