Killing Floor Unused Audio: Music, Voices and Zed Sounds

Killing Floor's sound folders hold far more than the game ever plays: music that maps ask for but never got, a whole test voice pack, alternate takes of player and Trader lines, cut Zed sounds and dialogue recorded for Objective Mode sections that were later trimmed. This page collects what has been found. The clips themselves can be heard on the TCRF Unused Audio page.

The other parts of this series: cut content overview, unused textures, unused text, unused and leftover weapons and revisional differences.

Unused music

Smooth Jazz (KF-Aperture)

The music trigger in KF-Aperture asks for a file called Smoothjazz.ogg during Trader time, but that file was never shipped, probably for licensing reasons. Since the map still looks for it, you can drop any OGG file into the music folder under that name and Aperture will play it between waves. The reference is the smooth jazz gag from Portal 2.

Smoothjazz.ogg

KF-Transit music

KF-Transit launched with several waves that have no music at all. According to the composer zYnthetic the tracks were left out by accident; he asked Tripwire to put them back, but that never happened. He later released them on his album "ERA" and made a mod that restores them to the map.

KFSIN7 (KF-MountainPass)

KF-MountainPass calls for a combat track named KFSIN7.ogg, which does not exist. The map maker meant zYnthetic's "Hunger", which does ship with the game, but left in the old KF Mod file name, and Tripwire never fixed it. As with Smooth Jazz, an OGG file saved under that name will play during Mountain Pass Zed waves, and it will be the only track there.

KFSIN7.ogg

"Take That", first version

The Siren's Blech track "Take That" seems to have an earlier version. The map plays KF_6_TakeThat2.ogg; the other file is almost identical, slightly quieter, and ends with the same quick fade, but it lacks the hi-hats that help the released version loop back to the start.

Eastern Front

If the menu music file is missing and you change the in-game volume, the game falls back to another song. Killing Floor's code inherits this from Red Orchestra and looks for RO_Eastern_Front.ogg, the Red Orchestra menu track. Despite the file name, the song is Matthew S. Burns's "Operation Barbarossa".

Unused sounds

Male Voice Pack 3

An entire voice pack sits unused. Every line is voiced by zYnthetic, the game's main composer and sound designer, and it is surprisingly large for something he says was only made for testing. A developer accidentally shipped it in one update, the community grabbed it, and it was pulled the next day. Steam Workshop mods can restore it.

Unused player voice lines

The Male 1 and Male 2 voice packs keep a few temp lines, uncompressed higher-quality takes and some lines that are not used at all; the female pack has one extra Crawler callout. It looks as if Male Voice 2 was made by copying Male Voice 1 before the audio was compressed, so any file that was not replaced in the second pack stayed in higher quality.

Unused Trader lines

The Trader has a set of welcome lines that never play. The KFShopVolume class does contain code for them, but it appears to be broken, since they never trigger in game.

Unused Zed sounds

The Gorefast has a complete, unused "Blade Falling" sound group. Presumably its blade arm could once be shot off, and these were the impact sounds. The Patriarch has several unused lines too, including four KF Mod lines re-recorded in a style much closer to the retail Patriarch.

Objective Mode dialogue

The Objective Mode maps leave behind a fair amount of unused dialogue. Most of it is alternate takes, but some lines refer to objectives that were cut.

Ringmaster Lockheart

Most of his unused lines seem to belong to the escort sequence.

Martel Halliday

Most of these lines look like dialogue for objectives that have none in the final map, plus a few unused variations. The 500-series lines seem to come from a cut section where the players actually boarded his boat: they sound as if they play over a different speaker system, he says "Exit by water, it's the only way", and he comes across more as an ally than the antagonist he is in the final map.
