Killing Floor Revisional Differences: Launch vs Current

Killing Floor changed a lot, in big ways and small, after its 2009 release. This page compares v1000, the launch-day build, with v1065, the current one. For the update-by-update timeline see patch history.

User interface

The launch UI

At launch the whole interface looked different: everything shared the red and black look of the HUD, and overall it was much closer to the mod. Today the HUD is about the only thing left from that era.

  • The main menu had a red overlay over the Specimen in the background, no film grain, no DLC buttons and no DLC menu at all.
  • The Demolitionist perk did not exist yet, and perks topped out at level 5.
  • Achievement icons were in full colour. The current ones are mostly white pictograms on green backgrounds.
  • The settings were almost the same, but the HUD settings had no Kill Counter option, and the menu used a different background picture.
  • The server browser had a different background and no Hell on Earth filter, because that difficulty had not been added yet.
  • The solo/host menu had a different background and no game mode choice, since Objective Mode did not exist at release.
  • The lobby screen had no ads.
  • Some HUD text used a different font that was slightly bigger and bolder.
  • The Trader menu was completely different.

Original achievement designs

For Twisted Christmas in Space (winter 2012), the Moonbase achievements were styled to match the map, as most seasonal event achievements were. With Hillbilly Horror: Fright Yard (Halloween 2013) every earlier achievement was redrawn in one common style. These are the originals.

Maps

Biotics Lab

At the back of the starting floor, in the room with two staircases going down, a section of steel ceiling grating used to hang down next to some barrels. It formed a ramp that let players climb into the space above, which holds two vent spawns for Crawlers and Stalkers. That upper area had no floor, so a player who got overwhelmed could run to the open parts and drop back down. The ramp was later removed, but the room in the ceiling is still there.

Abusement Park before Hellride

When Hellride arrived with Summer Sideshow 2012, Abusement Park got a design pass that added two interactive attractions and covered up some dull spots. The map was not actually updated on the event's first day: the developers had to hold back the revamped version because of bugs, and it went live four days later.

  • The Freak Circus entrance sign changed the most. It used to have a Fleshpound head in the middle with two Crawler heads beside it. These were just the decapitated head models scaled up, so they looked blurry and jagged and still showed their gore mesh.
  • Where the interactive dancing Amazing Mechanical Man stands now, there was only empty space.
  • The spot that now holds the Hellride entrance and the Pop-the-Clot booth had a plain tent in the middle, with a rock wall behind it and more wall to its left.

Original firing sounds

All firing sounds in the current build are stereo. At launch the first-person view used the same mono sounds as third person; an update soon after release replaced them with stereo versions in first person. The old files can be heard on the TCRF page.

Lever Action Rifle

The third-person Lever Action Rifle sounds, which were the first-person sounds at launch:

Rifle_Fire1, Rifle_Fire2, Rifle_Fire3, Rifle_Fire4
