Crossover ZED Mods - Dead Space, Resident Evil and Other Replacements

Every Killing Floor specimen has a clear job: trash, flanker, tank, ranged threat, boss. That makes the roster easy to re-skin. For years modders have mapped monsters from other horror franchises onto it, and the result plays like normal Killing Floor while the enemies come from Dead Space or Resident Evil. This page collects the best-documented crossover mods, shows how roles carry over, and explains what you need to run them.

How replacement mods work

There are two broad approaches:

ApproachWhat changesExample
Skin replacementModels and textures only; behavior stays KFKF Crazy mutator
Specimen replacementNew specimen classes with their own models, sounds and sometimes abilitiesResident Evil ZEDs
Total conversionEnemies, player characters, weapons and mapsKF Dead Space

All three are installed like other Killing Floor mods: packages go into the game folders and a mutator or game type activates them. Step by step: installing mutators, manual map installation and, on a server, adding a mutator to the server.

KF Dead Space (Wolf Pack clan)

Killing Floor Dead Space mod video cover The Wolf Pack clan's Dead Space mod for Killing Floor.

A 2012 mod from the Wolf Pack clan brings ZEDs, player characters and weapons from the Dead Space universe into Killing Floor. The trailer's joke is that Isaac Clarke himself has gone mad from the Marker and fights on the enemy side.

What the mod changes:

  • Enemies: necromorph-style creatures replace the standard specimens.
  • Players: Dead Space characters and suits.
  • Weapons: Dead Space-style tools and guns, including scoped weapons.
  • Settings: environments styled after Dead Space, including an alien planet surface.

Credits and status

The trailer was produced by Michael "Whisky" Gartley of Wildcard Production Studios. Its credits thank the modding teams that allowed their work to be incorporated, as well as Tripwire Interactive, Epic, and EA's Dead Space studio. Like most crossover mods it combines assets from several sources, which is one reason such projects stay unofficial and free.

The mod was released after the trailer. The main download point is the KF Dead Space page on ModDB.

Resident Evil ZEDs (USF)

Killing Floor Resident Evil ZEDs video cover USF [GAMEMODS]: Resident Evil monsters in place of the standard ZEDs.

A 2018 mod by the Russian modder USF replaces every enemy in standard Killing Floor mode with creatures from Resident Evil. Maps, weapons and perks stay vanilla, so it plays like a normal match with a different bestiary.

The replacement table

The mapping is a good illustration of how roles carry over: each Resident Evil monster takes the slot whose behavior fits it best.

What was planned

The author said more would come if the mod caught on: G-type monsters, zombies from the Umbrella security service era and possibly the Ustanak. Treat that as a wishlist rather than shipped content.

KFMod 2.52: the Patriarch's odd death

Killing Floor 2.52 mod video cover A clip of an unusual Patriarch death in the KFMod 2.52 build.

Not a crossover, but from the same corner of modded oddities. A 2015 stream clip from the old KFMod 2.52 build for Unreal Tournament 2004 shows the Patriarch dying in a way the retail game never does. The team gets the "Your squad survived" screen and nobody is quite sure what just happened.

Your squad survived screen in KFMod 2.52 The KFMod 2.52 victory screen right after the strange boss death.

It is a reminder that the mod-era builds still behave differently from retail. More on that era: ZED evolution from KFMod to KF2 and the prototype.

Additions

Custom zeds from the "Monsters" and "Mutators" sections of the killingfloor.ru forum. The download links in those threads died long ago, so this list keeps only descriptions and the strings to enable them: sandbox classes go into the Sandbox monster list, add-zed mutators go into the launch line or MutLoader. On a server, custom zed packages are usually added to ServerPackages in killingfloor.ini. According to [WPC] Hemi (thread The GoreShank), after update 1046 the mutators that add zeds to squads stopped working, and adding zeds through Sandbox was recommended instead.

WPC clan zeds

  • The Brute (version 1.4, posted on the forum by wesatnic). A brute whose abilities resemble the Fleshpound's (except that he knocks you back instead of grinding you up): he covers his head with an arm, and shots to the head and the blocking arm deal 10% damage, but from the side or back the head takes full damage. He rages after too much damage in a short time (50 points in 2 seconds) and knocks players back. F4TAL1ST listed beta bugs: no damage from leg shots or the flamethrower, removes Husks from the game, sometimes slows the game down.
  • The Shiver. A relative of the Clot that can speed up and teleport. Sandbox Shiver012.ZombieShiver, mutator MutAddShivers.MutAddShivers. VETAL's numbers (Normal, one player): Clot 130 HP, damage 6, speed 105; Shiver 650 HP, damage 8, speed 100.
  • The Fatale. The thread had no description. Sandbox Fatale.ZombieFatale, mutator Fatale.MutAddFatale.
  • The Bastard (Alpha [WPC] and Hemi [WPC]). The Patriarch's "mentally challenged brother", designed to be useless and annoying: his hits slow players down (even Berserkers), he blocks paths, and his head is weak. Sandbox Bastard.ZombieBastard; the updated version is HMBastardMut.ZombieBastard (aggroes on sight, fixed hitboxes, an extra attack). offutt posted a Dead Patriarch variant: double health, more damage, 1.5 times faster.
  • The Sick ([WPC] Hemi). Something between a Clot and a Bloat: faster than a Bloat and vomits, but cannot grab. Sandbox HMSickMut.ZombieSick.
  • The GoreShank ([WPC] Hemi). A fast Gorefast with two cleavers, new animations and a new attack. Sandbox GoreShank.ZombieGoreShank.
  • The Shafter ([WPC] Hemi). Animations almost the same as the Bastard's. Sandbox Shafter.ZombieShafter.
  • Arachnophobia ([WPC] Whisky). An improved Crawler with new abilities. Per Flame: mutator MutArachnophobia.MutClimbingCrawler, class MutArachnophobia.ClimbingCrawler.
  • The Legacy Mod (WPC, from the Steam Workshop, posted by kok-s). A game type with the stock models and the WPC zeds, sources included; pick it as the Gametype and set difficulty and length on the Sandbox tab. Classes: WPCClassicServerMut.ZombieBrute, WPCClassicServerMut.ZombieDarkBrute, WPCClassicServerMut.ClimbingCrawler, WPCClassicServerMut.ZombieFatale, WPCClassicServerMut.ZombieFleshPummel, WPCClassicServerMut.ZombieGoreShank, WPCClassicServerMut.ZombieHellFire, WPCClassicServerMut.ZombieSick, WPCClassicServerMut.ZombieShafter, WPCClassicServerMut.ZombieButcher, WPCClassicServerMut.ZombieShiver; the set also includes the Bastard and a Hard Patriarch.

Other zeds

  • FirePounds ("FleshHusks"). A Fleshpound that throws Husk fireballs; it comes with the "Слуги Бетрезена" (Bethrezen's Servants) mutator, which spawns only FleshHusks. String per Flame: KFFirePounds.KFRangedPounds.
  • MadHuskMut. Replaces the Husk with a "Mad Husk": stronger, faster, more health, fires more often and fires rockets, immune to fire and explosions.
  • Jason Voorhees. A Scrake styled after Jason from the cult film, a bit stronger than the original. Sandbox Jason_Vorhees.ZombieJason.
  • OldZombie (Rainishe). Brings back the stock zombies cut in patch 1030; Sandbox only:
OldZombie.ZombieClot2
OldZombie.ZombieCrawler2
OldZombie.ZombieGoreFast2
OldZombie.ZombieStalker2
OldZombie.ZombieScrake2
OldZombie.ZombieFleshpound2
OldZombie.ZombieBloat2
OldZombie.ZombieSiren2
OldZombie.ZombieHusk2
  • Killing Floor [NEW] Zombies (posted by wesatnic). Many zombies that look like infected civilians, with their own animations (heads fly off) and female skins. The full version replaces all stock zeds; the addon adds the new ones alongside the stock zeds and requires the full version.
  • Mauler (cut out of WTF by offutt). A Scrake that rages as soon as he sees a player, with a bigger chainsaw and a harder hit. Mauler_T goes into Textures, Mauler.u into System; Sandbox only: Mauler.Mauler. One user got ordinary Scrakes in the attacks instead of Maulers.
  • Banshee (cut out of WTF by offutt). A cross between a Siren and a Stalker: sneaks up invisible and screams, with a weaker scream than the Siren's; the Commando sees her like Stalkers. Sandbox Banshee.Banshee, and ServerPackages=Banshee in killingfloor.ini.
  • WTFZombies (Flame, thread "Зомби из WTF мода", Zombies from the WTF mod). All WTF zombies in the WTFZombies package, resources in WTFZombies_T; ServerPackages=WTFZombies is needed in [Engine.GameEngine], and the zeds are added through Sandbox or spawned via admin. Classes and traits per Flame: WTFZombies.WTFZombiesMetalClot (3910 body HP versus 130 for a Clot, weak head, half the speed), WTFZombies.WTFZombiesBloatzilla (1575 body HP versus 525, 312 head versus 25), WTFZombies.WTFZombiesBanshee, WTFZombies.WTFZombiesBroodling (a small spider you can stomp), WTFZombies.WTFZombiesBroodMother (spawns three spiderlings), WTFZombies.WTFZombiesGoreallyfast (hits while running), WTFZombies.WTFZombiesIncinerator (a Husk analog that turns kamikaze for 5 seconds below half health), WTFZombies.WTFZombiesMauler, WTFZombies.WTFZombiesMeatpounder (an FP that rages from any damage but never on a timer), WTFZombies.WTFZombiesLeaper, WTFZombies.WTFZombiesHateriarch.
  • Ghoul (Rainishe, beta). ZombieGhoul.GhoulMut adds the ghoul to squads, ZombieGhoul.GhoulsOnlyMut spawns only ghouls; Sandbox ZombieGhoul.ZombieGhoul. According to Schmaiser, the ghoul gives off radiation: a Geiger counter clicks, the screen flickers and health slowly drains.
  • The Dread v1.1 (HuNteR-). A kamikaze zed: explodes and can kill in one hit up close. With the mutator, each Stalker spawn has a 1 in 4 chance to be a Dread. Sandbox AddDread.Dread, mutator AddDread.DreadAddMut.
  • Renegade (UltraKill, help from 3xzet and [B.R]HekuT). An aggressive, strong and fast zed with Clot behavior. Renegade.Renegade.
  • Female Fleshpound (3xzet; from v0.95 the project was adopted by poosh). Not a reskin: she rages from a single hit over 300 damage or from any hit below 50% health (75% on Suicidal and Hell on Earth), and calms down only after hitting her target (on Hard and below even after a miss, on Suicidal only if the hit dealt damage, on Hell on Earth only after killing the victim). Body 1100, head 600, +30% per player, damage 30, speed 140, 322 when raged. Spawns in waves 6-10 of a long game, 4-7 of a medium game and wave 4 of a short game. In the mutator menu: Add Female Fleshpound; Sandbox v0.92 FemaleFPZED_v092.FemaleFP, v0.95 FemaleFPZED_v095.FemaleFP and FemaleFPZED_v095.FemaleFP_MKII; for a dedicated server FemaleFPMut.MutFemaleFPADD.
  • RageScrake (>>Redrum<<). A red Scrake with more health than a Fleshpound. RageScrake.RageScrake, works without Sandbox too.
  • Pseudogiant ("Операция Ы"; model, animations and sounds by GSC Game World, scripts by Flame, add-to-wave mutator by Poosh and WPC). A Chernobyl mutant that creates shockwaves. Beta.
  • Tesla Husk (poosh). A robot Husk (a modified Circus Husk) with an electric pistol: more health, faster, easily stunned by sniper weapons, does not burn; the beam hits every target nearby; heals others; after "decapitation" it detonates an EMP charge within 3 seconds. Part of ScrnMonstersMut (bAddTeslaHusks = True in ScrnBalance.ini) or installed as a separate MutAddTeslaHusks; both need the ScrnHusks base package and are incompatible with each other.
  • Titan Hulk ALPHA v0.4 (UltraKill). The Brute's "mutated brother": faster, more health, weaker hit but stronger knockback.
  • Creepy Clots (Half-Dead). A rework of the Metal Clot with a different model. HorrorClot.HorrorClot.
  • HL2 AntLion beta (gall87). Antlions from Half-Life 2. AntLion.ZombieAntLion_sheet, AntLion.ZombieAntLion_sheet2, AntLion.ZombieAntLion_sheet3, AntLion.ZombieAntLion_sheet4.
  • Bloodsucker v0.3 (gall87). A humanoid with tentacles instead of a mouth that can turn invisible. Krovosos.ZombieStalkerKrovosos_STANDARD.
  • Patriarch from KF2 (gall87). Model, sounds and animations from KF2: KF2Patriarh.KF2HardPat (based on HardPat), KF2Patriarh.KFoldPat (old behavior), and a bonus KF2Patriarh.KFPatKiller (a Russian message saying who killed the boss). drummer36 noted that the boss does not move while firing, unlike the old HardPat.
  • Alien Swarm 2K4 (posted by dosche4kin). A set from the Tripwire forums based on the Alien Swarm mod for UT2004: the Alien Drone Zed (a bit stronger and faster than a Clot, enabled with the "Alien Swarm" mutator), the IAF 22A3-1 rifle based on the M41A Pulse Rifle (99 rounds, 5 underbarrel grenades; AlienSwarm2k4WeaponsMod.IAFARPickup for ServerPerks, FreePerksServer or CustomShopV2) and eight marines. On a client the marines are installed by replacing .upl files in System (back them up first); on a server through ServerPerks, Custom Character Enabler or FreePerksServer with CustomCharacters= lines in ServerPerksV5.ini or FreePerksServer.ini:
CustomCharacters=IAF_Sergeant_Conrad
CustomCharacters=IAF_Corporal_Jaeger
CustomCharacters=IAF_Private_Wolfe
CustomCharacters=IAF_Private_Bastille
CustomCharacters=IAF_Private_Crash
CustomCharacters=IAF_Private_Flynn
CustomCharacters=IAF_Private_Faith
CustomCharacters=IAF_Private_Wildcat
  • Alpha Zeds Skins (posted by Lexass). New zed skins; Flame named the packages AzedsFinal and ColoredLoaderScreens. For the custom loading screens, in User.ini under [GUI2K4.UT2K4ServerLoading] the lines Backgrounds=2k4Menus.Loading.loadingscreen1 and so on are replaced with Backgrounds=robotpackage.Loading.LS1 ... Backgrounds=robotpackage.Loading.LS12. Atlan found a bug: with AzedsFinal the Patriarch spawns as the stock one even if the server uses its own, and posted a version with all Patriarch references removed.

Other ways to change the ZED roster

You do not need a full crossover to shake up the enemy list:

Want to build your own? Start with creating mutators and UnrealScript modding setup.

Before you install

  • These are old UE2.5 mods. Expect manual installs and version checks; see package version mismatch.
  • Custom content on a public server is usually not whitelisted, so perk progress will not count. See the whitelist system.
  • Large packages slow down joins. Server owners should set up fast download.
  • Back up your game folder before installing a total conversion.
  • Download only from the mod's own page or ModDB.

FAQ

Do crossover mods work in online matches?
Yes, on servers that run them. Every player needs the mod's packages, usually through the server's redirect, and custom content is normally not whitelisted, so perk progress does not count.
Where can I download the Dead Space mod?
The KF Dead Space mod by the Wolf Pack clan is listed on ModDB. Download only from the mod's own page or ModDB.
Is the Resident Evil ZEDs mod finished?
The author replaced every standard specimen with a Resident Evil counterpart. Extra monsters were planned depending on interest; treat them as a wishlist.
Can I make my own ZED replacement?
Yes. A mutator or custom game type can swap the specimen classes the game spawns. Start with the mutator guides in this knowledge base.
Do these mods exist for Killing Floor 2?
The mods on this page are for the original Killing Floor (UE2.5). KF2 has its own Workshop content, covered in the KF2 mods guide.
