KF2: Unlock FPS Above 62 for 120/144 Hz Monitors
Killing Floor 2 ships with a frame-rate limit of roughly 62 FPS, which wastes a 120 Hz or 144 Hz monitor. This short guide shows the two INI edits the author used to lift the cap and play above 120 FPS. A video walkthrough was published with the original guide.

What you need
- A text editor. The author recommends Notepad++ because it makes search-and-replace in config files easy, but any editor with a find function works.
- Windows 10 was used in the guide; other Windows versions should be similar, you may just have to navigate to the folders slightly differently.
Where the files are
Open Documents > My Games > KillingFloor2 > KFGame > Config. You need two files from this folder:
KFGame.iniKFEngine.ini
Close the game before editing, and keep a backup copy of both files.
Steps
- Open both files in your editor.
- Search for
bSmooth. Change everyTrueyou find toFalse. Use "find next" until you have changed all matches in both files. - Search for
SmoothedFrameRate. The maximum value is 62; change it to 122 or 142 (or whatever you want just above your monitor's refresh rate). Repeat the search until every matching line has the same value. - Save both files and launch the game.
If everything worked, players with 120 Hz and 144 Hz displays should see a noticeably higher frame rate than before.
Notes
- The cap is a smoothing feature of the engine, so values above your actual hardware limit simply have no further effect.
- The author also states the same format works in Rising Storm 2: Vietnam (same engine), reaching above 80 FPS in his own tests, though the config folder lives elsewhere.
- If the game ever overwrites your changes after an update, repeat the edit. For general graphics tuning see also FPS tweaks via INI.
FAQ
- Why is Killing Floor 2 stuck at about 62 FPS?
- The engine smooths the frame rate and caps it with a MaxSmoothedFrameRate value of 62 in the config files.
- Which files need to be edited?
- KFGame.ini and KFEngine.ini in Documents/My Games/KillingFloor2/KFGame/Config.
- Does the same trick work in Rising Storm 2: Vietnam?
- The author reports that it does, using the same format, but the config folder is in a different place.
