KF2 Crashing on Main Menu: Delete KFGame.ini and Profile.bin

Killing Floor 2 can start crashing, often right at the main menu, even if it worked for months. In this community fix the author hit the problem twice and found that the usual advice (delete the config, reinstall) was not enough, because an old copy of the profile data kept restoring the corrupted settings.

What is going on

The author first saw random crashes in 2022 and blamed the "favorite weapon" system, which seemed to corrupt a stored file. Wiping that file helped. Later the crashes returned even without using favorites. Reinstalling twice and deleting the config in Documents did nothing, and neither did turning off Steam Cloud and deleting the file.

The real cause was an old game file in the Steam userdata folder that silently restored the corrupted config every time. Deleting it reset Killing Floor 2 to defaults (settings, controls, graphics), and the crashing stopped.

A likely reason: custom settings and bound keys do not always survive game updates, and a later patch can corrupt the config. The author says this has been reported since Early Access by many players on Reddit, the Tripwire forums and Steam forums.

Step 1: delete the config

On Windows 10 the file is:

C:\Users\<name>\Documents\My Games\KillingFloor2\KFGame\Config\KFGame.ini

Delete it and launch the game. If it still crashes, continue.

Step 2: turn off Steam Cloud, delete again

Right-click Killing Floor 2 in your Steam library, open Properties, General, and disable Steam Cloud. Delete the config file again and launch the game. Still crashing? Continue.

Step 3: delete Profile.bin

  1. Make sure Steam Cloud is disabled for the game.
  2. Go to your Steam install folder, then userdata\<your account ID number>\232090\remote.
  3. Delete Profile.bin.
  4. Launch the game. All settings, graphics and controls are back to default.

This last step is what fixed the author's game. The credit for the idea goes to a Reddit user called HazardousMonkey.

FAQ

Is deleting KFGame.ini safe?
Yes. The game regenerates it with default settings, but you lose custom graphics options and key bindings.
Where is Profile.bin?
In your Steam folder under userdata, in your account ID folder, then 232090, then remote. Turn Steam Cloud off for the game first, otherwise the file can be restored.
