KF2 Going Silent When Alt-Tabbed: KFGame.ini Fix

By default Killing Floor 2 mutes all sound when its window loses focus, for example when you alt-tab or open the Steam overlay. That is annoying when you want to hear the trader timer or the wave while checking something else. A single config value fixes it. See also the related page sound muted on focus loss.

The fix

  1. Close the game.
  2. Open Documents\My Games\KillingFloor2\KFGame\Config\KFGame.ini.
  3. Search (Ctrl+F) for mute.
  4. Change bMuteOnLossOfFocus=True to bMuteOnLossOfFocus=False.
  5. Save and close the file.

Keep it from resetting

Players in the comments noted that the game may rewrite this file after updates and bring the old value back. Set the file to read-only in its properties after editing so the change stays.

When it helps

  • Alt-tabbing out while the trader is open, but still hearing the countdown.
  • Keeping game audio during the Steam overlay or a browser check.

FAQ

Why does KF2 go quiet when I alt-tab or open the Steam overlay?
The game ships with bMuteOnLossOfFocus set to True, so audio is cut whenever the window is not in focus.
Why did my change stop working?
The game can rewrite KFGame.ini after updates. Marking the file read-only keeps the value in place.
