KF2 Slow Launcher Fix: Delete Movies, Skip Intros, Raise FPS Cap

This short guide (in English, with an Italian version) speeds up the slow startup of Killing Floor 2. The cure is to remove files the game does not need at launch and, optionally, to lift the 62 FPS cap. The author says it cut startup from 4 to 5 minutes to about 60 seconds.

Remove the startup movies

Go to killingfloor2\KFGame\Movies and delete all files in that folder. You may keep the menu background and loading screens if you want them.

A reader's tip: rather than deleting, right-click the game in your library, open Properties, Set Launch Options and add -nostartupmovies. Deleted files can be restored by updates, while the launch option stays. This is a two-second fix.

Remove unused audio languages

Go to killingfloor2\KFGame\BrewedPC\WwiseAudio\Windows and delete the folders that hold audio localizations for languages you do not use. Do not delete the loose files that are not inside a language folder; only the folders marked with a language such as Spanish.

Next open the Localization folder and delete the language folders you do not need. The author kept only the ITA folder for Italian and left everything else out. Keep your own language.

Raise the frame rate cap

Go to Documents\My Games\KillingFloor2\KFGame\Config and open the game's config file. Find MaxSmoothedFrameRate, delete the value 62 and put 240. This is a separate improvement for frame rate rather than load time.

Notes

  • Game updates can bring files back, so repeat the cleanup if startup becomes slow again, or rely on the launch option.
  • Removing unused language folders also saves disk space.

FAQ

How much faster does the game start after this fix?
The author reports the game starting in about 60 seconds instead of 4 to 5 minutes.
Is deleting the Movies folder permanent?
A game update or file validation may restore files. The launch option -nostartupmovies is a cleaner alternative, because deleting files may be undone by patches.
Which setting raises the FPS limit?
In KFGame.ini under Documents\My Games\KillingFloor2\KFGame\Config, change MaxSmoothedFrameRate from 62 to a higher value such as 240.
