Running a Server

KF2 Private Server With a SteamCMD Kit: Ports, Web Admin, Map Cycle

This guide, written in both English and Thai, explains how to open a private Killing Floor 2 server using a prepackaged SteamCMD kit (the "KF2Server V.6" pack by RuneSama) and how to configure Web Admin and the map cycle. The method dates from the game's early years, and a later comment asks whether it still works, so check the current dedicated server pages too: dedicated server with SteamCMD.

Do you have enough hardware?

The author's recommended minimum for hosting while playing:

  • CPU: Intel Core i3 or better
  • RAM: 8 GB or more
  • GPU: GTX 960 or better with 2 GB+ VRAM
  • Disk: about the size of the game, or slightly less

If you have never forwarded ports, search for your router model plus "port forward", or simply ask your ISP to forward ports 7777, 27015 and 80XX (where XX is the number set in Web Admin).

Setup steps

  1. Download and unpack the SteamCMD kit.
  2. Open the SteamCMD folder and double-click Run SteamCMD.bat.
  3. Wait for the console to finish, then type quit.
  4. Open kf2serverfile\KFGame\Config\PCServer-KFGame.ini.
  5. Find Servername= and set your server name; find gamepassword= and set a password.
  6. Save the file.
  7. In kf2serverfile, start the server with Create Server.cmd and choose your settings.

Forward 7777 so people can connect from the internet and 27015 (UDP, or both) so the server appears in the in-game server browser. Create the server before starting your game each time. To update, run Run SteamCMD.bat before Create Server.cmd. If friends cannot join, test your ports with a port-checker site and, if they stay closed, contact your ISP.

Web Admin

  1. Forward port 8080. If it does not work, change the last two digits (for example 8008); keep the leading "80".
  2. In PCServer-KFGame.ini find AdminPassword= and set the password you want for Web Admin.
  3. In KFWeb.ini find ListenPort=8080 and change it to your port, then change bEnabled=false to true.
  4. Start the server, then open 127.0.0.1:80XX in a browser. Log in with any username and the admin password, then configure as needed. The server must be running first, every time.

Adding other maps to the Map Cycle (Web Admin needed)

  1. Open SteamCMD\kf2serverfile\KFGame\Config\PCServer-KFGame.ini.
  2. Find the GameMapCycles=(Maps=(...)) line. In version 6 it lists the official maps from KF-BurningParis through KF-Airship, including KF-KrampusLair, KF-Prison, KF-DieSector and KF-Powercore_Holdout.
  3. Add your map's name at the end of the list, inside the quotes, for example ,"KF-YourMap".
  4. Your Workshop or unofficial map now appears for selection in Web Admin.

Changelog: V.6 added the KrampusLair, Prison, DieSector and PowerCore_Holdout maps to the selection page.

Comments

Players asked how to set Weekly or Endless mode (the author replied that Web Admin handles settings and promised more options in a later version), and one asked whether the method still worked in 2022.
