Interlude
The sixth expansion: augmentation, Primeval Isle and duels
Interlude is the sixth expansion of Lineage 2. Below are all the changes known at the time of the update's release: from character improvements and weapon augmentation to duels and the interface.
Character improvements
- The amount of experience lost on death was changed. For levels 1-75 it stays the same, while from level 76 the loss decreases with each level relative to the standard amount.
- The chance of a death penalty for a "red" (PK) character was greatly increased.
- The size of the death penalty (reduced combat stats) was increased.
Weapon Augmentation
A system was added that lets players give their weapons new bonuses at a blacksmith. Augmentation requires a Life Stone and Gemstones. Weapons can be augmented at the blacksmith NPC in every town except the starting villages and Gludin.
- Any weapon from C to S-grade can be augmented. C and B-grade weapons require Gemstone D, A and S-grade weapons require Gemstone C.
- Life Stones drop from monsters; raid bosses have a higher chance of dropping high-level stones than regular monsters. The stone shows the character level required to use it.
- The Life Stone must match the weapon grade: for example, a level 46 stone cannot be used on an A-grade weapon, while a level 76 stone works on a C-grade weapon.
- To augment, drag the weapon, Life Stone and Gemstones from the inventory into the augmentation window and press Augment.
- The blacksmith can remove an augmentation for a fee.
- The bonus is random and depends on the level of the Life Stone and the weapon. The augmentation success rate is 100%.
Bonus types
- Increased base stats (STR, CON, INT, MEN).
- Increased combat stats (P. Atk., P. Def., M. Atk., Accuracy, etc.).
- An additional skill (active, passive or chance skill).
Augmented weapon rules
- The bonus has no effect if the augmented weapon's grade is higher than the character's expertise.
- A matching prefix is added to the augmented weapon's name.
- Augmented weapons cannot be traded, dropped on death, sold or placed in the clan warehouse, but they can be stored in the personal warehouse. To transfer the weapon, the augmentation must be removed.
- Weapons with an SA and enchantment can be augmented, and augmented weapons can be enchanted and given an SA. Removing the augmentation keeps the SA and enchantment.
- If the bonus comes from a Life Stone above mid-grade, the weapon glows.
- Augmented weapons cannot be used to craft dual swords and cannot be exchanged at the Mammon Blacksmith.

- Spellbooks for Celestial Shield, Invocation, Summon Attract Cubic, Aura Flash and Summon Swoop Cannon are sold in Rune, Goddard and Ivory Tower. They can be bought once per hour.
Swoop Cannon
From level 68, a Warsmith can summon the Swoop Cannon - a new siege weapon for the attacking side. Castle defenders cannot use it. Unlike the old siege golems, it uses its skills without switching modes.
- It can only be summoned in a siege zone.
- Summoning costs 46 A-grade crystals, after which it constantly consumes 21 B-grade Gemstones per minute.
- The Swoop Cannon fires at its target from range and hits all characters and NPCs within a certain radius, including allies and neutrals. If characters outside the siege zone are caught in the blast, they take the same damage, and the shooter may receive PK penalties.
- Its shells do not damage walls, gates or flags.
- The Swoop Long Shot and Swoop Middle Shot skills cannot be used inside the castle, from the walls or outside the siege zone.
- Its attacks consume Flash Gunpowder, sold in Rune and Schuttgart.
- The Swoop Cannon disappears when destroyed.
Castle-owning clan skills
New skills were added to the circlet worn by members of a castle-owning clan and to the clan leader's crown. The Lord's Crown is obtained from the castle Chamberlain, who also sells circlets for ordinary members. Clan academy members cannot wear these circlets.
- Residential Shock Immunity - greatly increases resistance to shock attacks for a short time.
- Clan Gate - creates a portal for summoning clan members. The skill appears in the active skill list while the Lord's Crown is worn. After it is used, a summoning field appears and the clan leader cannot move while the portal is active. All clan members receive a system message about the portal and for 2 minutes can talk to the Court Magician in the castle to teleport to the leader.
- When the castle is lost, the crown disappears and the skill is automatically removed from the list.
Changes to existing skills
- Stun Shot power was slightly increased.
- Benediction now requires 25% MP to cast instead of 25% HP.
- Mana Burn and Mana Storm now wake up sleeping characters.
- The effect (critical hit multiplier) of Death Whisper, Fire Dance, Eye of Pa'agrio and Chant of Rage was reduced.
- Recharge no longer works on Elven Elders and Shillien Elders - the classes that have the Recharge skill.
- There is now a chance to resist the spells Wind Strike, Aqua Swirl, Twister, Blaze, Death Spike, Prominence, Ice Dagger, Hurricane.
- Greater Heal and Chant of Life / Heart of Pa'agrio now take effect at the same time, and the heal-over-time buff takes a buff slot.
- Healing Potion effects were moved from buff slots to healing slots.
- Bishops can now enchant level 11 Major Heal.
- Curse Fear and Horror now work on players.
- The soulshot effect for melee skills was significantly increased.
- The effect of Magical Backfire was increased.
- Whirlwind, Thunder Storm, Hammer Crash, Soul Breaker, Tribunal, Judgment, Armor Crush and Shock Blast were significantly strengthened.
- With soulshots, the following skills deal more damage than before: Power Strike, Power Shot, Stunning Shot, Stun Attack, Iron Punch, Stunning Fist, Sting, Wild Sweep, Power Smash, Triple Slash, Double Shot, Burst Shot, Spinning Slash, Thunder Storm, Punch of Doom, Poison Blade Dance, Sword Symphony, Fatal Strike, Hammer Crash, Burning Fist, Soul Breaker, Crush of Doom, Strider Siege Assault, Lethal Shot, Sonic Rage, Force Rage, Earthquake, Spoil Crush, Hamstring Shot, Shock Blight, Armor Crush, Evade Shot, Tribunal, Judgment, Psycho Symphony, Demon Blade Dance, Double Sonic Slash, Sonic Blaster, Sonic Storm, Sonic Buster, Triple Sonic Slash.
- The following skills can now be enchanted: Tribunal, Judgment, Arrest, Shackle, Mass Shackle, Banish Undead, Critical Blow, Mortal Strike, Stealth, Sand Bomb, Mass Curse Fear, Mass Curse Gloom, Trance, Erase, Magical Backfire, Mana Burn, Mana Storm, Turn Undead, Major Heal, Major Group Heal, Summon Swoop Cannon, Shock Stomp, Aura Flash, Banish Holy.
- The success rate of Seal of Chaos, Seal of Poison, Seal of Winter, Seal of Flame, Seal of Gloom and Seal of Mirage was increased.
- Deflect Arrow levels 2, 3 and 4 were significantly strengthened.
- Serenade of Eva's success rate was increased and its reuse time greatly reduced.
- The effect and conditions of Sonic Buster, Sonic Storm, Force Burst and Force Storm were changed: they require 1 more charge.
- Characters become semi-transparent when using Silent Move, Chameleon Rest, Shadow Dance and Stealth.
Primeval Isle
Primeval Isle, an island full of strange creatures, was added south of the town of Rune. It can be reached by ship from Rune Harbor or by swimming.
- The island is meant for hunting by high-level characters.
- Here you can level up SA soul crystals (levels 11 and 12), do a clan reputation quest and a quest for new A-grade weapon ingredients.
- The island's main boss is the monster Sailren. To enter its lair you must complete the quest "Attack Sailren".
- Monsters drop blue, green and red "primeval" crystals that add 50,000, 100,000 or 200,000 SP.
- Tyrannosaurs can go berserk during a fight. Trap skills make hunting them easier in this state.
- An NPC at the Primeval Isle wharf will bring dead party members to your location for a fee.
- You leave Primeval Isle via its wharf. The wharf is a peace zone.
Trap system
- Trap skills were added that greatly reduce the attack power of Primeval Isle tyrannosaurs.
- Using them requires an Elrokian Trap and Capture Stones.
- The Elrokian Trap is rewarded by the quest "Elrokian Hunters", which starts near the Primeval Isle wharf.
- Capture Stones are available from an NPC in the far south of the island. If you accidentally delete the trap received from the quest, the same NPC will give you a new one.
Items
- Top A-grade weapons were added. A level 12 soul crystal is needed to give them an SA. Components and recipes (60%) can be obtained from quests on Primeval Isle.
- New accessories were added: an eye patch, an angel's circlet, a demon's circlet, a pirate hat, a scar and a butterfly ornament. They can be obtained at the Festival of Darkness, the Olympiad and from some raid bosses.
- Some items that cannot be traded or dropped can now be placed in the warehouse.
- The reuse time of Elixir of Mental Strength was reduced from 10 to 5 minutes.
- Elixir of Mental Strength and Elixir of Life now share the same reuse time for the same grade. After using an A-grade Elixir of Life, you cannot use an A-grade Elixir of Mental Strength or A-grade Elixir of Life for 5 minutes.
- When an elixir is placed on the shortcut bar, the reuse indicator appears only after it is used.
Shadow Weapons
Temporary weapons with a limited lifespan were added to make different weapons easier to access. A Shadow Weapon looks and works like the regular one but has a limited lifetime.
- When a Shadow Weapon's remaining time or mana reaches 0, it is removed from the inventory.
- Time or mana is consumed only while the weapon is equipped. Equipping and unequipping it often makes it run out faster, and logging in and out also increases consumption.
- Shadow Weapons cannot be traded, dropped or placed in the account-shared warehouse - only in the personal warehouse. They cannot be enchanted, augmented, given an SA or crystallized.
- Weapons obtained with a Shadow Weapon Exchange Coupon have less time or mana than those bought in a weapon shop.
- Shadow Weapons come in D, C and B-grade.
- Players who complete a class change quest receive a coupon: a D Grade Shadow Weapon Exchange Coupon for the first class and a C Grade Shadow Weapon Exchange Coupon for the second. The coupon cannot be sold, lost or given away. Handing it to your class's Grand Master lets you choose a Shadow Weapon.
- C and B-grade Shadow Weapons are sold by weapon merchants in towns. Characters of level 40 and above can buy them, and the available weapon types depend on level.
Blood Sword Akamanah
A new cursed weapon was added - the dual swords Blood Sword Akamanah.
- Its appearance, use and PvP rules are the same as for the Demonic Sword Zariche.
- Akamanah and Zariche automatically disappear 24 hours after the last PK made with the sword. A system message shows the remaining time.
- When the owner of Akamanah or Zariche dies, the chance of dropping the sword and the time until it disappears automatically change at 50:50.
- When the owners of Zariche and Akamanah attack each other, both have their CP drop to 0.
- If the owner of Akamanah picks up Zariche, Zariche disappears and Akamanah's level rises by 1. And vice versa.
- The owner of Zariche or Akamanah gets Void Flow and Void Burst in their active skill list. The cursed weapon must be equipped to use these skills.

Changes to existing quests
- Enhance Your Weapon. Sailren and the tyrannosaurs were added as monsters that can level a Soul Crystal to 11 and 12. Any member of the party killing them can level up a crystal. When a player levels a crystal from 11 to 13, a system message announces it to all players in the area.
- Class change quests. On completion you receive a Shadow Weapon coupon: D-grade for the first class and C-grade for the second. The coupon cannot be sold, exchanged or dropped. After completing a class change quest and some other quests, the character strikes a "victory pose".
- Testimony of Glory. The NPC Enku Chief Kepra was moved to the southern coast of the Dion region.
- Saga quests. In the Saga of the Duelist, Dominator, Ghost Hunter, Eva's Saint, Spectral Master, Hell Knight, Spectral Dancer and Maestro quests, the Tablet of Vision that used to be in Ketra Orc Outpost was moved to the southeastern part of the outpost.
- Repent Your Sins. Level 80 characters can no longer take this quest, but they can switch to a subclass and do it.
Monsters
Raid bosses
- A wandering raid boss, Gordon, was added. When Gordon spots a player carrying a cursed sword (Zariche or Akamanah), he attacks to take the sword.
- The appearance and speed of some raid bosses were changed.
- If a raid on the boss in Pagan Temple fails, the boss returns to its original location.
- Both leaves of the Gate of Splendor leading to the boss room in the Monastery of Silence now open at the same time. 60 seconds after opening or closing, the gate cannot be opened for 30 minutes. The Gate of Splendor can no longer be opened with the Unlock skill.
- Fixed a problem where the aggressive boss Gigantic Chaos Golem in Pavel Ruins did not attack passing players.
- The forced display before Frintezza that appeared outside the Last Imperial Tomb was changed.
- Fixed a problem where Baium did not kill the player who woke it up.
- The raid boss Master Anays in the Monastery of Silence was changed: if it is outside when it or its guards are attacked, it teleports back to its room. If the guards are outside and the boss is in the room, the boss stays put when the guards are attacked. If the boss is outside when the server goes down, it is teleported back to the room.
- Because fortresses were added, the bosses Eye of Beleth and Kelbar were relocated, and all other monsters that could spawn where the fortresses will stand were removed.
Antharas and Valakas
- The HP, P. Def. and M. Def. of Antharas and Valakas were reduced.
- Antharas' behavior was changed: its difficulty and the reward depend on the raid's composition.
- Antharas gained minions whose lifetime depends on the raid's composition. Killing a minion can give the raid useful restoration.
Other
- Regular monsters in Pagan Temple, Monastery of Silence, Imperial Cemetery, Forge of the Gods, Dimensional Rift and Ketra/Varka Silenos Stronghold were changed to level 80.
- In 80+ hunting grounds, regular monsters were changed to level 80. Their abilities and rewards (experience, etc.) remain the same, except for treasure chests.
- Treasure Chests no longer spawn near fortresses - in Floran Agricultural Area, Dragon Valley, Plunderous Plains and Hunters Valley.
- Fixed experience loss when dying while riding a wyvern.
- Fixed the Dark Elf Village Gatekeeper animation.
Command Channel
- The command channel window was integrated into the regular chat window.
- Command channel chat uses the
key (left of 1): ``textfor party leaders, ```text ``` for the channel leader's commands. - The channel leader's commands pop up in a window at the bottom right of the screen. If you select Hide Commander's Chat in the chat filter, they are not shown.
- A channel can be created and players invited even without the Clan Imperium skill, using the Strategy Guide item sold in Town of Aden, Rune Township and Town of Schuttgart.
- The alliance that lands the first hit on a raid boss gets loot priority (a message announces it). Priority conditions:
- raid monster - more than 18 people in the command channel;
- boss monsters (Queen Ant, Zaken, Orfen, Core, etc.) - more than 36 people;
- Antharas - more than 225 people in Antharas' Nest.
- 5 minutes after a raid boss is killed, normal loot rules apply. If another raid successfully kills the same boss before then, the first group keeps priority.
- A List Update button was added to the command channel report window (number of parties / total members). This window can now be minimized.
Duel system
A duel system was added for those who want PvP outside the arena without losing experience.
- Duels are possible only when players are not flagged, regardless of their levels.
- There are no death penalties.
- When a duel (including party vs party) ends, HP, MP and CP return to their pre-duel values, and all buffs and debuffs are removed.
- Automatic refusal of duels can be enabled in the options.
One on one
- A button for this was added to the actions window.
- The loser is the one whose HP drops to 1.
- A duel is limited to 2 minutes.
Party vs party
- A button for this was added to the actions window. The challenge is sent by the party leader but can be addressed to any member of the other party.
- If the other party agrees, both parties are moved to the arena.
- A duel is limited to 2 minutes.
- Blessed Scrolls of Escape and escape skills cannot be used during a duel.
When a duel is impossible
A duel is impossible if at least one party member:
- is in combat, in another duel or is a PK;
- is in the Olympiad;
- is running a private store or private manufacture;
- has HP and/or MP below 50% (including being dead);
- is in a siege (clan or alliance at a siege);
- and also if the challenge is sent to a member of your own party, the player is in a no-restart zone, a siege zone, a peace zone or a battlefield, the other participant is too far away, there is no free space in the party arena, the other participant is in a clan hall during a siege, or the player is riding a strider, wyvern, etc.
Warnings
- A party in a command channel that accepts a duel is removed from the channel.
- A party in the party matching window that accepts a duel is removed from that window.
- Any trade by a party member is automatically canceled when moved to the arena.
- If a player attacks an NPC or is attacked by one during a one-on-one duel, the duel ends, but HP/MP/CP are not restored.
Ending a duel early
A duel ends early if:
- a player uses the
/withdrawcommand; - the distance between players becomes too great (the target window disappears);
- a player moves into an area where duels are not allowed;
- a player attacks an outside player;
- during a one-on-one duel a player attacks an NPC or is attacked by one (including skills and magic).
User interface
Map
- The Enlarge Map button in the regular map window (Alt+M) expands the map to full screen.
- Maps of five starting dungeons were added: Abandoned Coal Mines, Cave of Trials, Elven Ruins, Elven Fortress and School of Dark Arts. Entering a dungeon opens a window with its map.
- The map shows the movement of Zariche and Akamanah, and when they meet in one place a skull icon appears.
Party window
- The party member status window can be minimized or restored to normal size.
- Party members' buffs and debuffs can be shown or hidden with a button in the full-size party window or with Alt+F.
Screen messages
- Messages from various channels can now be shown on screen.
- Duel messages are shown as screen messages.
Auto-targeting
- If a player has no target and is attacked by a monster, NPC or another player, the attacker is targeted automatically.
- If a player is hit by a target-cancel skill, the target is automatically restored after about 10 seconds.
Other changes
- A player who gets disconnected is returned to the login window.
- A party matching button was added to the chat window.
- The inventory cannot be opened while a shop or warehouse window is open.
Sieges
- When the Seal of Strife is unsealed, the Nephilim Mercenaries become significantly stronger.
- Wild Hog Cannon HP was increased.
- The defending side cannot destroy castle gates.
- If the player who summoned a Siege Golem uses Summon Trance or Gate Chant, the golem disappears.
Seven Signs
- The way to enter the Catacomb of the Apostate, Catacomb of the Heretic and Catacomb of the Forbidden Path was changed.
- When the Seal of Strife belongs to the Lords of Dawn, the Revolutionaries of Dusk cannot use siege weapons (Siege Golem, Wild Hog Cannon, Swoop Cannon). When Dusk holds the seal or nobody does, siege weapons can be used.
For more on the Seals, see Seven Signs.

- Fortresses were added; they will become available in the later update The Chaotic Throne.
- The Coliseum arena was changed: free-for-all PvP is no longer held there.
- The system message window setting was moved from the general options to the chat options.
- Food consumption of regular pets was reduced.
- Indestructible doors (such as clan hall or castle doors) are shown as "door" in the target window, and their HP is not displayed.
- Some arrival points of regular, Noblesse and clan teleports were moved to safer places.
- Fixed a problem where the Pagan Temple Dungeon Gatekeeper responded incorrectly to players without a mark.
- After the countdown at the start of an Olympiad match, CP, HP and MP are restored once more.
- New restrictions apply to moving from "Hero waiting" status to Hero: only a main class (not a subclass) above level 75 can become a Hero.
Additional notes
According to l2db.ru:
- The update was released on April 11, 2007 under the full name Interlude: The Chaotic Throne. It ended the Chaotic Chronicles line and opened a new one - the Chaotic Throne.
- Life Stones come in No Grade, Mid-Grade, High-Grade and Top-Grade, and also have levels; the augmentation bonus depends on the stone's grade. A stone whose level is higher than the character's level cannot be inserted.
First information about the update
Before release, a Korean presentation announced that the new Chaotic Throne chapter would begin with Interlude and come out in winter. The plans announced then (some were later implemented in Interlude and The 1st Throne: Kamael, some changed):

- Primeval monsters and a new type of location. New primeval monsters and a new kind of hunting zone - something between a dungeon and open terrain, where players can hunt without getting in each other's way.
- Item processing (augmentation). Players would be able to add new stats and properties to items themselves - for example, a bigger head or a skill that works like a Blessed Scroll of Escape. At the presentation augmentation required 940 A-grade Gemstones. Examples of processed items: a Blessed Scroll of Escape skill; STR +1 and Accuracy +2; HP +91, Critical +2.8% and increased monster aggression with every successful hit; Evasion +2, Accuracy +2 and a brief invulnerability skill. None of these items can be traded or dropped.
- New cloaks (not ready at the time) and items reflecting a character's status - from Vagabond to Marquis.
- New weapons from A to S grade and a new item slot in the inventory.
- Fortresses. Between a clan hall and a castle in size, designed for small clans: castle-owning clans would not be able to fight for fortresses. Battles would mix PvP and fights with NPCs, and the fortresses would resemble the Devastated Castle.
- National wars - bigger than castle sieges, with airships to move armies, naval and aerial combat and battles between servers. A lost battle closes the town in the war zone, while a victory opens new dungeons near the town and shops.
- A new NPC race, hostile to everyone.
- A mini-game players can customize themselves, and a wedding palace - a plaza for big events such as weddings.

Item processing window: augmentation required 940 A-grade Gemstones.

Developer answers to player questions:
- A pet patch was planned for wolves: lower food consumption and new abilities as they grow.
- Extra effects for highly enchanted weapons (+10, +16), such as stronger Acumen or Focus, would come with the new weapon processing system.
- An additional friend-or-foe recognition system was being developed for sieges.
- A Sword of Blood was planned for Interlude - unlike the Demonic Sword it would have an active skill; battles between Demonic Sword and Blood Sword owners were also planned.
- 21 fortresses would be added for small clans.
- A notification about Soul Crystal level-ups in a party was promised.
- Character name changes were planned for around December, server transfers later.
- Augmentation could be removed. The augmentation chance is always 100%, and the resulting effect differs every time; because of the high cost, the developers did not expect mass weapon processing.
- There was no information about the new race at the time.
