KF2 Industrial Metal Soundtrack Swap: KF1 Tracks Mod Guide
This guide describes a fan-made audio swap that gives Killing Floor 2 the heavy industrial metal sound of the first game. It was inspired by the zYnthetic soundtrack and swaps the vocal combat songs for 30 instrumental industrial tracks, with an optional set of 13 spookier ambient tracks for trader time and the lobby. For a general overview of other music mods see KF1 soundtrack music mod.
What the pack contains
- 30 instrumental industrial metal tracks that replace the 30 vocal tracks shipped with KF2.
- 13 ambient tracks picked by hand from the KF1 files, as a separate folder.
- An Excel sheet listing which new track replaces which original, with the length of each.
The pack does not touch the 17 instrumental zYnthetic tracks and 3 Rocky Gray tracks already in KF2, nor seasonal music, boss themes or menu themes. Because the vocal songs sit behind the Music With Vocals option, you can flip between the mod and the standard soundtrack in the Settings tab at any time: ticked gives you the mod, unticked gives you the stock instrumental versions of Demon Hunter and the rest.
Track length caveat
The replacements are matched to the originals by length, which matters because the game does not stretch a song. For example the longest KF1 track, "Bled Dry" (6:17), takes the slot of the longest KF2 track, "Someone to Hate" (5:27). If a wave runs past 5:27 while "Bled Dry" plays, the song cuts off and the next one starts. Typical waves last 3 to 4 minutes, so you will almost never notice.
Two more details from the author:
- "Welcome to Violence" normally plays only on Nightmare. It was added to the main set, so on that map it is possible, though rare, to hear it twice in a row.
- Ambient tracks can change suddenly or fall silent for a moment if you idle in the lobby, because their lengths differ from the originals. The trader phase is always 60 seconds, so you will not hear this in a match.
Installation
- Download the pack (the author hosts it on Google Drive) and unzip it.
- Close Killing Floor 2.
- Open
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\killingfloor2\KFGame\BrewedPC\WwiseAudio\Windows. The folders and numbered files there look meaningless, which is fine. - Back this folder up. If you skip this, "Verify Game Files" in Steam will restore the originals, but it takes much longer.
- Copy all 30 combat tracks into that folder and accept the prompt to replace 30 files with the same names. That prompt confirms you are in the right place.
- Optionally repeat with the 13 ambient tracks.
- Start the game and make sure Music With Vocals is ticked in Settings.
Tracklist
All songs are by zYnthetic from the KF1 soundtrack "Soundtrack for the Apocalypse" unless noted otherwise. Bled Dry, Parandemic, Disunion Reconstructed (Dirge, KF2 edition), Murder/Suicide, Welcome to Violence (from the KF2 files), Contamination Group, Abandon All, Mothership, Self Preservation, Watch the Planet Burn, Untitled Scratch 1, People of Earth, Pathogen, Abandon v3, Killphase, Systemic Decomposition, Human Genocide, Untitled Scratch 2, Repulse 1 (Dirge), Infectious Cadaver (Six Feet of Foreplay), Harm Intended, Blooddriven, Disunion 2 (Dirge), Witness Prevention, Containment Breach, Defection, Repulse 2 (Dirge), Attest (an unreleased zYnthetic track), Defective 1 (Dirge) and Disunion 1 (Dirge). Several songs come from zYnthetic's albums "It Has To End Someday" and "Era".
Version history
Update 1 fixed a mismatch: the in-game "Death" track is shorter than on the official soundtrack, so "Attest" was cutting off early. "Attest" and "Repulse 2" were swapped in the list so "Attest" plays to its ending.
Why not use the KF1 seasonal songs?
The author notes that other KF1 swaps mix in seasonal tracks, which does not fit combat. Instead this pack digs into zYnthetic's other albums and unreleased material, plus other KF1 staples from other artists. The author built it following a community guide on making your own soundtrack swap and offers to help with issues or suggestions.
FAQ
- Which KF2 tracks does this soundtrack swap replace?
- It replaces the 30 vocal combat tracks and, optionally, 13 ambient tracks. The instrumental zYnthetic and Rocky Gray tracks, seasonal tracks, boss themes and menu themes are left alone.
- How do I switch back to the normal soundtrack?
- Toggle Music With Vocals in the Settings tab. When it is on you hear the mod; when it is off you hear the standard instrumental set.
- Where do the files go?
- Into KFGame\BrewedPC\WwiseAudio\Windows inside the Killing Floor 2 install folder, with the game closed. Back the folder up first.
