KF2 Won't Start: Fixes From the Official Steam Thread
Killing Floor 2 has a long-running pinned thread in its Steam Bug Report forum called "Game Won't Start - Please Read!", opened by a forum moderator in November 2016 and updated through 2023. It has collected hundreds of replies. This page summarizes the moderator's instructions and the problems and fixes that players posted in one section of the thread (replies from late 2016 to early 2017), and adds the standard steps for each case. For a general walkthrough, start with Killing Floor 2 not launching on Steam.
What the pinned post says
- Startup crashes and problems belong in this thread. Gameplay bugs (map issues, cosmetic clipping, weapon problems) should go into a new thread in the Bug Report section instead.
- Follow the official guide first. The post links to a Steam guide that walks through the common troubleshooting steps and then a set of advanced steps if those do not work.
- If nothing helps, share your log. Players are asked to post their log file (for example on Pastebin) so the moderators can look at it.
KF2 writes its logs to Documents\My Games\KillingFloor2\KFGame\Logs\. The Launch.log file from the failed start is the one to share.
Problems reported in the thread
| Symptom | What it usually means | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| "Failed to reach Item Server. Client failed to exchange item" when opening a USB/crate | The item service could not be reached | Retry later, check your connection, contact Tripwire support if it lasts |
| Windows asks for .NET Framework 3.5, and "Download and install" does nothing | A required Windows component is missing | Enable .NET 3.5 manually (see below) |
| Game says you need Steam to play | It was started outside Steam, or Steam is not logged in | Start Steam first and launch KF2 from your library |
| Game minimizes after logos, keyboard stops working, then a black screen | Something sends a shutdown signal to the game | See the black screen section below |
| BugSplat crash report on every start | Engine crash during startup | Follow the guide, then post your log |
| "There is a bug and this program needs to close", verify did not help | Broken user config | Delete the game's files in Documents |
Item server error when opening crates
Several players could not open the encrypted USB items and got the same item server message for weeks with the same key. The thread had no fix for this beyond the usual advice: this happens on Tripwire's side or in the connection to it, so the game install is not the problem. Read more in KF2 item server connection and the item drop system.
.NET Framework 3.5 prompt
On first launch, Windows may show "An app on your PC needs the following Windows feature: .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0)". If clicking the download button does nothing:
- Press Win+R, type
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. - Tick .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0).
- Click OK and let Windows download the files from Windows Update.
- Restart the PC and start the game again.
If Windows Update is blocked or broken, the install from that window will fail as well, so fix Windows Update first.
"You need Steam to play"
KF2 uses Steam for login and items. Launching KFGame.exe directly, or with Steam closed or offline, gives this message. Start Steam, make sure you are logged in and online, then press Play in your library.
Black screen after the logos (second launch)
One player could start the game normally right after a reboot, but every later attempt failed: the game minimized after the logos, keyboard input stopped working, and it ended on a black screen. The log looked normal until the last lines:
Log: Initializing Engine Completed
Log: Received WM_QUERYENDSESSION
Log: Received WM_ENDSESSION
Log: appRequestExit(0)
WM_QUERYENDSESSION and WM_ENDSESSION are Windows messages that tell a program the session is ending, so the game shut itself down. Running as admin did not help. Since the problem only appeared after the first exit, check for a leftover KFGame.exe process in Task Manager and end it before trying again, and look for overlay or system tools that might close programs. For other black screen cases see KF2 black screen with audio.
BugSplat on every launch
Some players got the BugSplat crash dialog even after trying all the guide's steps and redownloading the game. The moderator's answer was always the same: post your log (Pastebin) or contact them directly, because a BugSplat crash can have many causes and the log shows which one. Others said they had done everything and were waiting for a patch.
"There is a bug and this program needs to close"
A player who got this message was told to verify the game files, which did not help. What fixed it was deleting the game's files in the Documents folder, that is Documents\My Games\KillingFloor2. These are your settings and logs, not the game itself, and KF2 recreates them on the next launch. Copy the folder somewhere first if you want to keep your keybinds.
The mood in the thread
Not every post had a happy ending. Some players reported that the game still did not start at all, and one asked why there were so many different fixes for what should be a simple problem. That is the nature of startup issues: the same symptom can come from drivers, Windows components, config files or overlays, which is why the guide and the log matter more than any single fix.
FAQ
- Where is the official troubleshooting guide for KF2 launch problems?
- The pinned 'Game Won't Start - Please Read!' thread in the Killing Floor 2 Bug Report forum links to a Steam guide with common and advanced startup fixes.
- KF2 asks for .NET Framework 3.5 and the download button does nothing. What now?
- Enable it manually: open 'Turn Windows features on or off', tick .NET Framework 3.5 (includes .NET 2.0 and 3.0), click OK and let Windows Update fetch it, then restart.
- Verifying files did not fix the 'There is a bug and this program needs to close' error. What else can I try?
- One user in the thread fixed it by deleting the game's files in Documents (My Games\KillingFloor2). The game rebuilds its config on the next launch, so back up the folder first.
- What does 'Failed to reach Item Server' mean when opening a crate?
- The game could not contact Tripwire's item service to exchange the item. It is a server-side or connection issue, not a broken install. Try later and contact Tripwire support if it persists.
