KF2 Audio Modding With WWISE: Replace Music With KF1 Tracks

Killing Floor 2 shipped without a music or audio modding SDK, but you can use the same tool the developers used to compile audio into a format the game understands: WWISE. This guide by a modder who reverse engineered the music files shows how to rebuild banks so KF2 plays KF1's soundtrack.

What you need

  • WWISE and a WWISE project to work with. For anything advanced you must reverse engineer the existing files and recreate a project that mimics the developers' original, which takes programming skill.
  • The author's sample project, which swaps the game's music and needs no programming experience. A 2016 archive and the latest version on GitHub (gia257/kf2kf1audiomod) were linked in the original.
  • The right WWISE build. After the guide was recorded, the Firebug + Demolitionist update changed the required software: it needs WWISE 2015.1.1 build 5434 (Stable).

The three tutorial videos

  1. Video 1 is for those who just want the sample project and the KF1 music mod; it also shows where to download WWISE.
  2. Video 2 explains WWISE itself by walking through the reverse-engineered project.
  3. Video 3 covers hex editing and the file format, needed for special fixes or to recreate files in WWISE yourself.

Advice

Always keep a backup in case something breaks beyond repair. The best way to learn WWISE is to change the project and press the play button inside WWISE to hear how the sound behaves.

Notes from the comments

  • The same process applies to voice (talk), effects and environment banks; the author later added a Patriarch voice file.
  • The author said there was no official support for music in the Workshop at the time, so sharing a custom soundtrack through it was not possible.

FAQ

Which tool is used for KF2 audio mods?
WWISE, the same audio middleware the developers used to build the game's sound banks.
Do I need programming skills?
Not for simple music swaps if you use the author's sample WWISE project. Advanced work means reverse engineering the original project.
Is the WWISE version important?
Yes. The author notes that the Firebug + Demolitionist update required WWISE 2015.1.1 build 5434 (Stable).
