KF2 Character Voice Mod With Wwise: Requirements and Tools

Replacing a human character's voice in Killing Floor 2 is possible, but the process is long and the game's mod system for audio is complicated. This article rewrites the opening part of a community voice-mod guide: the warning, the tools and the files you must prepare. The author, who credits skin modder F O X and Tripwire's Mark Murasaki for help, split the full process into three parts: getting to know what to do, the long process, and the final conversion with a test video. For general audio work see custom music with Wwise and WEM and extracting game audio.

Warning

Do not start unless you are ready for a long job. The guide is long because the workflow has many steps.

What you need

  1. The Wwise project that Mark Murasaki, Audio Director at Tripwire Interactive, shared for KF2 sound mods. The compiled folder is available through the link in his post.
  2. Wwise v2015.1.9 build 5624 (64-bit) from Audiokinetic. Do not use a later or earlier version, for compatibility.
  3. A free registered Audiokinetic account if you plan a full voice package for a character. A free non-registered account limits your soundbank (the single compiled output file) to 200 sound files, and Wwise will refuse to export beyond that. The author registered for a limited time of about 3 to 4 months.
  4. Audacity, a free sound editor, to prepare and trim the sound files.
  5. Your sound files for the character, organized by line type.

Folder of prepared voice lines for a character Prepared sound files: named per line type, such as ammo, armor and bloat damage comments, with numbered variants.

  1. Folder shortcuts to the locations you will use often, since the process involves many deep paths.

The three parts

  • Part 1: getting to know what to do.
  • Part 2: the long process.
  • Part 3: the final part of the project and conversion, with a test video.

Credits

The author thanks F O X (a KF2 skin modder) for the main help, Mark from Tripwire for tips and the compiled project, and other KF modders for information. Keep in mind that this kind of mod is client side: you only change what you hear.

FAQ

Which Wwise version should I use?
Wwise v2015.1.9 build 5624 (64-bit). The author advises against newer or older versions for compatibility.
Why register a Wwise account?
A free non-registered account limits a soundbank to 200 sound files, which is not enough for a full character voice pack. A free registered account lifts the limit.
Where do I get the base project?
Tripwire's audio director Mark Murasaki posted a compiled Wwise project for KF2 sound mods; the guide links to his post.
